Lipophile et bioaccumulable, l'HBCD est susceptible d'être présent dans les DAOA majoritairement sous sa forme alpha. Sa concentration n’excède souvent pas 1 ng HBCD / g de lipides. Cependant, quelques échantillons de viande de volaille ou d’œuf contenant jusqu’à 3000 ng /g de lipides ont été collectés lors de plans de surveillance. La principale source d’exposition des volailles serait le polystyrène extrudé (XPS) servant à l’isolation des bâtiments d’élevage.

Des expérimentations in vivo ont permis de montrer que des poules élevées en présence de XPS l’ingèrent et produisent des œufs qui en contiennent à des doses très élevées. L'ingestion de XPS dans des bâtiments d'élevage dégradés est une cause plausible de la contamination des œufs par l’HBCD Un polluant qui n’épargne ni les œufs… …ni les cuisses et filets de poulet.
