Abstract Safety of globally-sourced imported food commodities and supplements, and the development of public and private regulatory mechanisms to ensure their safety, were the subject of a broad-based collaborative project at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
The problems are complex and require a multi-disciplinary, systems-based perspective. The project began with numerous seminars and benefitted from a two-day conference in the first year. Many of the insights in this paper were originally inspired by presentations and discussions from that conference with attendees representing the food industry, government regulatory departments, scientific service companies, the legal community, and academics from a variety of areas. Attendees included representation from the European Union, Mexico, Canada, and China. NEJM 17/08/11 Will the Food Safety Modernization Act Help Prevent Outbreaks of Foodborne Illness? Large-scale outbreaks of foodborne illness have recently focused attention on the ability of the U.S. food-safety system to protect the public health.
The nationwide outbreak of Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium infection associated with peanut products that is described by Cavallero et al. is one example.1 This contamination, which was ultimately traced to the Peanut Corporation of America (PCA), took a high toll — 714 people were affected, about 200 were hospitalized, and 9 died. Investigators found multiple potential routes of contamination at PCA facilities, such as rain leakage and cross-contamination between raw and roasted peanuts.
Although the outbreak was eventually contained, key parts of the food-safety system clearly failed. There is a public health imperative to do better. The burden of foodborne illness is substantial: about 1 in 6 people in the United States get sick each year, 128,000 are hospitalized, and about 3000 die. Penn State Public Broadcasting’s fourth installment of the “Geospatial Revolution Project” identifies the uses of geospatial information in climate change research, global aid allocation, and disease tracking.
University Park, Pa. -- In this global society, people are free to travel to all corners of the world regardless of whether they’re carrying an infectious disease. This freedom of movement can cause global health concerns such as the spread of infections and the risk of pandemics. Geospatial information systems (GIS) are currently being used to help scientists and health experts track diseases to better respond to outbreaks. Episode four of the Geospatial Revolution Project, released May 3, explores how geospatial technology helps track the spread of disease. “If you look at how disease spreads, place becomes extremely important,” said Carl Kinkade, Enterprise GIS Coordinator at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
