Wood' (2004-2006) we investigate the conventions of telling a story. Starting point is the classical way of telling a story - the Hollywood way - and how this construction determines the way we put the things we see and experience in order. Hereby photography plays an important, but secondary role. The project is collaboration with graphic designer Vanessa van Dam and consists of telling two different courses of one story. In Bombay (Bollywood) and Los Angeles (Hollywood) they create two versions of the fictive character Mr. Wood, whose identity is dictated completely by chance. The method consists of a detailed questionnaire that leads to a search throughout the two cities. Within ten days a character occurs. MOTIVE GALLERY. Klein een lezing te geven. Hripsimé Visser, fotografieconservator van het Stedelijk, geeft daarnaast een korte introductie op het boek van Stig en Van Dam. Prof. Norman Klein, docent aan California Institute of the Arts, L.A., is bekend van publicaties en projecten waarin hij vanuit een multidisciplinaire benadering culturele vraagstukken aansnijdt. In zijn lezing in SMBA zal Klein vooral ingaan op de thematiek die hij met The History of Forgetting en ‘Scripted Spaces’ heeft aangesneden, en later verder heeft uitgewerkt in het boek The Vatican to Vegas: The History of Special Effects (2003). Het project krijgt van 15 tot en met 24 oktober bovendien nog een Amsterdamse pendant met behulp van stadsplanner Heather Flood uit L.A. en acteur/kunstenaar Johnny Vivash uit Londen. Uit deze database van ingetogen beelden construeerde de fotografe de twintig minuten durende film Suto-ri- (geschiedenis in het Japans). Met haar telescopische lens legde ze de subtiele bewegingen en ongecontroleerde reacties en gewoonten vast: een man in pak, zenuwachtig telefonerend, giechelende meisjes op de roltrap, een jongen die van zijn à propos raakt als een raaf zorgwekkend begint te kraaien. Zonder zich wat aan te trekken van hun omgeving uiten de anonieme filmsterren hun persoonlijke teleurstellingen, vreugde en verbazing waarvan we de oorzaak nooit zullen kennen.
