Their first big success was thanks to staff member Yoshio Kiya and his proto-RPG Dragon Slayer in 1984. Most of the blockbusters the company released in the following years were conceived by Kiya. Meanwhile, Koei was founded by the husband-and-wife team of Yoichi and Keiko Erikawa, who mailed out home-programmed tapes to whoever ordered them.
