The 5 Smells That Remind Me Of Being A Teenager. 1. Cloves Remember cloves? They smelled like beautiful incense but every puff deleted about five years off of your life expectancy. I think they’re illegal now because they contained fiberglass, which is apparently a no good very terrible thing for your body. 2. Okay guys, I’m about to take you somewhere real #dark so bear with me. 3. This is obvious. 4. I was lucky enough to grow up in a small coastal beach town with the ocean at my fingertips. 5. In high school, Glow by J.Lo was the hot perfume. What Clean Beauty Debates Do You Have? Posted by Alexandra on Thursday, January 5, 2012 · 37 Comments The night before I left my parents’ house over the holidays, I came across my old stack of British Vogues from the 90s. Delighted, I flopped on the bed, chatted with my sister, and flipped absentmindedly, narrating as I went (“oh my g-d look at that jumper!”).

And then there it was: an article about natural ingredients in beauty products, and how to source them sustainably (and locally). Huh. So natural beauty was this on the radar in 1997? And so was the local movement? The article even mentions Jurlique, a brand that we covered often in the book (not knowing they’d been around so long). My brain went from 0 to 100, from wow-that’s-so-cool-what-a-coincidence to why-the-hell-was-this-in-Vogue-back-then-and-not-now?

We know, we know, stuff takes a long time. What rebuttals do you hear most often from people? I don’t have time/it’s too overwhelming to figure out. Oh, but I use Khiel’s [or insert other greenwashed brand]. Advertise! | Green Talk® Vintage Advertising. ADVERTISING | Evergreen Moms: A Pacific Northwest Shopping Blog. Green Dimes. Are You Satisfied? Posted by Alexandra on Thursday, February 2, 2012 · 9 Comments For those new to the site, one of our kind-of claims to fame is for being early to sound the alarm, if you will, on the dangers of the Brazilian Blowout. Our book opens with a scene of us sitting in a fancy West Hollywood salon, choking on the formaldehyde fumes of this now infamous hair treatment.

It marked the beginning of our journey into clean beauty—without the BB, there would be no book and no site. Behind closed doors, we were later told that the negative attention brought upon the blowout, by us and other clean-beauty and public health advocates, helped serve as a catalyst for the lawsuit thrown down by California’s Attorney General back in November 2010. California has this nifty law called Prop 65 that stipulates products that contain carcinogens must feature a warning label on it.

And now it’s been enforced for the first time. Is it enough? Requirements as listed by a Department of Justice press release: Image via. From the Archives: Six Dangerous Products Men Use Daily—And What To Use Instead. Posted by Alexandra on Thursday, January 26, 2012 · 26 Comments Some of you may recall this popular GOOD post from my darling cowriter Siobhan. But because we have so many new readers (welcome!) , and some of you are indeed men (yay!

Welcome!) , and also because a few of you specifically requested a repost, voila: the original post for the boys (and the women who love them). Have you (or your boyfriends, besties, husbands) tried these recommends? Gentlemen, listen up. When, in February 2010, Axe Body Spray’s parent company was fined $1.3 million for air pollution, it sounded like an Onionesque joke. So here’s a primer on the stuff in your everyday products, plus what brands and products to buy instead. Cologne: Most conventional colognes (and “body sprays”) contain a host of synthetic chemicals that can affect your little swimmers. Aftershave: Most aftershave contains alcohol, the toxicity of which is less a concern than the fact that it can dry out your face when it needs moisture. Managing Stress: 6 Good (And 5 Bad) Things To Do When You Can’t Sleep. Posted by Siobhan on Thursday, January 19, 2012 · 21 Comments When my insomnia hit the other night, I did everything wrong.

I’d managed to work myself up about something before bed, but because I have the stamina of a toddler when I’m upset, I tired myself out quickly and crashed hard around 11:30pm. Then, at 4:30am, my brain went on like a light. There I was, in that strange time when “tonight” becomes “tomorrow” and the last thing in the world you should be doing is witnessing it. (Unless of course you’re doing something really fun—which I wasn’t. I was lying there with looping thoughts, the lights on, a search window open on my laptop, and Twitter fired up on my phone…) We have written plenty about sleep hygiene here. But isn’t it funny (dumb) that no matter how much you know about the Right Thing To Do for your wellbeing, it’s often exactly when you need that advice the most that it escapes you?

Posted by Siobhan on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 · 30 Comments Last night over a glass of wine, my friend announced he was on day 1 (and take 2) of a new diet. Well, not a diet, exactly, and I’m paraphrasing here, but he said something to the effect of: “When I cut out dairy, processed sugar and wheat, I wake up every day feeling better than I’ve ever felt in my life.” Gah. I want to feel like that! Who doesn’t want to feel like that, frankly. But I don’t, and I notice it most when I first wake up in the morning. Do most people wake up feeling awesome?

The thing is, I would wager that most of us know exactly what we need to do to feel our best. We know how much sleep we need *We can list the foods we digest most easily **We can identify the habits that make us feel like garbage and, in theory anyway, we could not do those things ***We know what kind of exercise our body craves ****We understand who make us feel all happy and glowy ***** * 8 hours *** I’m not telling image via.
