Filling the gaps: how citizen journalism is replacing local press

The demise of regional papers and the rise of online media have opened up opportunities for individuals to run grass roots websites reporting on issues that matter to them, writes Naomi Westland . The aftermath of the Birmingham riots captured by blogger Adam Yosef. Yosef's was work was picked up by the BBC and Sky.

Good journalism costs money. Good investigative journalism often costs a lot of money. How much? Today, Tyler Dukes, managing editor of Duke University’s Reporters Lab, tweeted: . @ newsobserver editor John Drescher says it’s not unsual for the paper to spend $150,000-$200,000 on a single reporting project. I love that John has put a price tag on it. http://johnlrobinson.com/2012/03/the-high-cost-of-good-journalism/

Annonsvärdet duger inte som mått på pr-effekt. Det menar Per Söderpalm och Jonathan Wennö på TNS Sifos enhet för medieanalys, och presenterar sju nya mätprinciper. En ny grund har lagts för medieanalysbranschen.

What Can Our Times Learn From the Launch of the London Times’ Pay Wall? -- Daily Intel

On July 2, the London Times went behind a pay wall, enforcing a £2 a week surcharge to read any and all of its content. It was Rupert Murdoch's decision to make the move, as part of his larger plan to move all of his News Corp. titles' content into for-pay terrain. Murdoch's Wall Street Journal here in New York already operates with a highly successful, semi-permeable pay wall. But its rival, the New York Times , currently provides all of its content online for free. Coming in January of 2011, though, the Gray Lady will also institute a new pay wall . It won't exactly mimic that of the London Times , as it will be a metered system and some content will even be available for free — but the transition from all-access to costly content will be jarring, to say the least. http://nymag.com/daily/intel/2010/07/what_can_our_times_learn_from.html

The app allows you to share your exact, realtime location with the people you specify for the amount of time you specify. This means people won’t be able stalk you all the tim e — only when you want them to.

What happens when journalism is everywhere? — Tech News and Analysis

When the Arab Spring demonstrations were under way in Egypt’s Tahrir Square and reports were streaming out through Twitter and Facebook and text messages and cellphone videos, it was easy to feel superior to the Egyptian government. How could they not realize that information can no longer be contained by blockades or even internet blackouts when everyone has the power to publish? Now the authorities in New York City and elsewhere have been getting a dose of that medicine, with the “Occupy Wall Street” protests being tweeted and live-streamed in real time. As the Associated Press learned this week to its chagrin, we all have newswires at our disposal now.
