Distinct patterns of grey matter abnormality in high-functioning autism and Asperger's syndrome. Abstract: Background: Autism exists across a wide spectrum and there is considerable debate as to whether children with Asperger’s syndrome, who have normal language milestones, should be considered to comprise a subgroup distinct other from high-functioning children with autism (HFA), who have a history of delayed language development.

Distinct patterns of grey matter abnormality in high-functioning autism and Asperger's syndrome

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies of autism are in disagreement. One possible reason is that the diagnosis of autism takes precedence over Asperger’s syndrome and a distinction in language acquisition is rarely made. We therefore planned to examine a whole brain hypothesis that the patterns of grey matter differences in Asperger’s syndrome and HFA can be distinguished. We used voxel-based computational morphometry to map grey matter volume differences in 33 children with either Asperger’s syndrome or high-functioning autism compared to 55 typical developing control children balanced for age, IQ, gender, maternal language and ethnicity.

Despite its increasing popularity as a distinct condition (included in the ICD-10 in 1993 and in the DSM-IV in 1994), the nosological status of Asperger's syndrome (AS) and its diagnostic validity remains uncertain.

Comorbidity of Asperger's syndrome and bipolar disorder

An astonishing 556% increase in pediatric prevalence of pervasive developmental disorders (PDD) has been reported between 1991 and 1997 [1]. This jump is probably due to heightened awareness and changing diagnostic criteria rather than to new environmental influences. Both AS and autism persist into adulthood, but their phenotypic expression varies with age. AS may also be unrecognized in adulthood, although usually not forever. Some individuals with AS live almost normally and show good adaptation, while many can hardly cope and need supervision. Comorbid psychiatric conditions are frequent in patients with PDD. Data on BD and AS comorbidity are inconsistent. Notwithstanding such gray area, growing evidence suggests that PDD and BD frequently co-occur. Case 1 Case 2. Simons Simplex Collection Project

What is the purpose of this study? The Simons Simplex Collection (SSC) project is a new initiative to search for the causes of autism. Earlier research efforts studied multiplex families, or families with more than one child with autism. The current study is focused on families with just one child with autism, called simplex families, which will provide insight into the most common and unexplained form of autism. How can I participate? Your family may participate if: You have only one child with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), age four or older, You have additional child(ren) without ASD, age four or older, and Both biological parents are willing to participate. A Few Good Reasons to Like the DSM-5 Autism Criteria Changes. Concerns about the up-coming changes to the autism criteria in DSM-5, have now seeped their way into the wider autism community, and indeed into the broader public consciousness.

A Few Good Reasons to Like the DSM-5 Autism Criteria Changes

The most popular critiques were originally directed at the loss of existing divisons within the autism spectrum; most especially of the separate category of “Aspergers” (to be folded into autism more generally in the DSM-5). More recently, the focus has turned to the (supposedly high) number of people who may lose an autism diagnosis altogether under the new criteria, and in turn concern over consequent loss of access to government-paid-therapies, special schools, and insurance cover. (Those numbers are highly debatable and hotly contested though, see for example this blogger’s post looking at the recent news stories and issues, and this press release from the APA (pdf).) (1) The changes should make it easier to accurately distinguish between giftedness and (what is currently known as) Aspergers. Autism Research at the NICHD.

Recommendations for Evaluation and Treatment of Common Gastrointestinal Problems in Children With ASDs

Most episodes of acute diarrhea resolve within a week's time and are frequently caused by self-limited infections. In contrast, the causes of chronic diarrhea are generally different and include more noninfectious causes than for acute diarrhea. In the US general pediatric population, the most common causes of chronic diarrhea are functional disorders, malabsorption syndromes, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn disease or ulcerative colitis), and chronic infections.15 The causes of diarrhea in children on the autism spectrum are likely the same as in children without ASDs, and the differential diagnosis should be approached with similar rigor.

Evaluation of the Efficacy of Communication-Based Treatments for Autism Spectrum Disorders. Relationship Development Intervention (RDI): A Treatment for Autism - Autism Treatments. Talent in autism: hyper-systemizing, hyper-attention to detail and sensory hypersensitivity. Abstract We argue that hyper-systemizing predisposes individuals to show talent, and review evidence that hyper-systemizing is part of the cognitive style of people with autism spectrum conditions (ASC).

Talent in autism: hyper-systemizing, hyper-attention to detail and sensory hypersensitivity

We then clarify the hyper-systemizing theory, contrasting it to the weak central coherence (WCC) and executive dysfunction (ED) theories. The ED theory has difficulty explaining the existence of talent in ASC. While both hyper-systemizing and WCC theories postulate excellent attention to detail, by itself excellent attention to detail will not produce talent. By contrast, the hyper-systemizing theory argues that the excellent attention to detail is directed towards detecting ‘if p, then q’ rules (or [input–operation–output] reasoning). Talent in autism: hyper-systemizing, hyper-attention to detail and sensory hypersensitivity. What aspects of autism predispose to talent? What aspects of autism predispose to talent?

Abstract In this paper, we explore the question, why are striking special skills so much more common in autism spectrum conditions (ASC) than in other groups?

What aspects of autism predispose to talent?

Current cognitive accounts of ASC are briefly reviewed in relation to special skills. Difficulties in ‘theory of mind’ may contribute to originality in ASC, since individuals who do not automatically ‘read other minds’ may be better able to think outside prevailing fashions and popular theories. However, originality alone does not confer talent. Executive dysfunction has been suggested as the ‘releasing’ mechanism for special skills in ASC, but other groups with executive difficulties do not show raised incidence of talents. Autism and Regression (My PubMed Research Paper Collection) Neural Correlates of Familiar and Unfamiliar Face Processing in Infants at Risk for Autism Spectrum Disorders. Examining the neural correlates associated with processing social stimuli offers a viable option to the challenge of studying early social processing in infants at risk for autism spectrum disorders (ASDs). The present investigation included 32 12-month olds at high risk for ASD and 24 low-risk control infants, defined on the basis of family history. Infants were presented with familiar and unfamiliar faces, and three components of interest were explored for amplitude and latency differences.

The anticipated developmental effects of emerging hemispheric asymmetry for face-sensitive components (the N290 and P400) were observed, as were familiarity effects for a component related to attention (the Nc). Although there were no striking group differences in the neural response to faces, there was some evidence for a developmental lag in an attentional component for the high-risk group.

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN NEUROPATHOLOGY OF AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDERS. Deficient brainstem encoding of pitch in children with Autism Spectrum Disorders.[Clin Neurophysiol. 2008] Management of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders. The term autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) has been used to include the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision (DSM-IV-TR)1 diagnostic categories autistic disorder, Asperger disorder, and pervasive developmental disorder–not otherwise specified.2 Recent estimates of the prevalence of ASDs are in the range of 6.5 to 6.6 per 1000, and pediatricians, therefore, are likely to care for children and adolescents with these diagnoses.3–5 In the companion document to this clinical report,2 the American Academy of Pediatrics has summarized pertinent background information on ASDs and emphasized the importance of surveillance and screening as well as other potential physician roles in the diagnostic process.

ASDs, similar to other neurodevelopmental disabilities, are generally not “curable,” and chronic management is required. Optimization of medical care is also likely to have a positive impact on habilitative progress and quality of life. Autism Spectrum Disorders. Early intervention yields big benefits for children with autism — SFARI. Joint attention: The Early Start Denver Model helps children with the disorder learn new skills by building on their interests.

An early intervention method can help children with autism improve their language and behavioral skills, and raise their intelligence quotients (IQs), according to a study published late last year in Pediatrics1. After two years on the program, called the Early Start Denver Model, some children’s diagnoses even shifted to a milder form of the disorder, the researchers say. The study is the most rigorous analysis of a behavioral therapy for autism, and the first to evaluate a program designed specifically for toddlers. As the age of diagnosis for autism creeps lower, researchers are scrambling to find treatments appropriate for the very young. "We have had so much junk science, snake-oil treatments and false leads, it is certainly refreshing to read a study such as this one," Schreibman says.
