Recently, Deb spent some time relaxing in her Massachusetts backyard with her three dogs, Papo, Pinto, and Sully, replenishing her vitamin D and re-reading Eckhart Tolle’s A New Earth. While reading, she was interrupted and experienced the most joyous moment with her dog Papo. As Deb recounts of that moment, “my dogs don’t normally see me just sitting and reading. Many times I’m working in my gardens, watering my flowers or playing with them, mostly with Papo — he loves to play fetch”.
Half an hour into her reading, Deb explains, Papo, a sheltie, looked at her and began to bark. While Deb wanted to continue her reading, Papo wouldn’t take no for an answer, and started to tell her a story with a series of different-pitched barks, undaunted. Deb, enchanted by Papo’s display, began laughing uncontrollably. Why did Papo want to bring Deb joy? Deb explains that she and her husband, Jose, are still soulmates, even though he is gone in his physical form.

Let’s start with Tolle’s credentials, or rather lack thereof: He had no formal education between the ages of thirteen and twenty-two, refusing to go to school because of its “hostile environment”; but he pursued his own “particular interests.” On the first page of the introduction, Tolle describes his literally overnight “awakening.” Tolle is not used to being questioned. He also has a hopeful vision of how these methods can save our civilization from eco-catastrophe. It would be great if his teaching can do these things as they are so important. Can meditative methods developed for and by monks and mystics be applied to people in the modern world who have family and other social responsibilities? The first question I wonder about is whether his emphasis on oneness with the divine and being in the moment will totally take care of the problems normal people encounter in modern life. Tolle’s most basic emphasis is on the power of the present moment. I am not so sure these two things fit together.
