It engages all the parts of the self: the entire body is intimately involved in the production of the sound; the heart supplies the emotional component; in chanting sacred songs the soul is engaged in their messages; the mind memorises the words and melody and then, when things become automatic, it tunes out and we enter our deeper mind to partake of its wisdom.
The content of songs and the energy raised by their performance often bring emotions to the surface. This, of course, allows us to heal any stuck patterns we recognise in the memories sparked by these emotions. Because many chants are short and repetitive, one often reaches a point where the songs sing themselves and the mind can tune out or "trance out.
