Red Squirrel. The red squirrel or Eurasian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) is a species of tree squirrel in the genus Sciurus common throughout Eurasia.

Red Squirrel

The red squirrel is an arboreal, omnivorous rodent. In Great Britain, Italy and Ireland, numbers have decreased drastically in recent years, a decline associated with the introduction of the eastern grey squirrel (Sciurus carolinensis) from North America,[3][4] although habitat loss is also a factor.[5] Description[edit] The underparts are generally white/cream in colour Profile of the Eurasian red squirrel in grey winter coat The red squirrel has a typical head-and-body length of 19 to 23 cm (7.5 to 9 in), a tail length of 15 to 20 cm (5.9 to 7.9 in) and a mass of 250 to 340 g (8.8 to 12 oz).

The red squirrel, like most tree squirrels, has sharp, curved claws to enable it to climb and descend broad tree trunks, thin branches and even house walls. By DAVID DERBYSHIRE Last updated at 11:06 26 April 2008 For years, the grey squirrel held sway - driving its red cousin into the remotest corners of the country.

But now the black squirrel has arrived - and is rampaging through parks and woodlands. Scientists say the testosterone-charged black is fitter, faster and more fiercely competitive than both reds or greys. Scroll down for more... It has already taken over in parts of England and appears to be spreading. Its rise means the greys now have serious competition for the first time since they were introduced to Britain from America in the 1870s. The black squirrel is also likely to make life even harder for our native red squirrels. A study by Cambridge scientists shows that black squirrels now make up half the squirrel population in some parts of the UK. The upstarts are genetic mutations of greys, but have a darker fur and higher levels of the male sex hormone testosterone - making them more aggressive and more successful.

UK Red Squirrel Group. The UK Red Squirrel Group (UKRSG) aims to co-ordinate and raise awareness of the conservation needs of our native red squirrel and the action being taken to deliver this under the UK Red Squirrel Species Action Plan.

UK Red Squirrel Group

The group has an official responsibility to report the success and progress towards this within the overall UK Biodiversity Action Plan but also helps to develop and co-ordinate advice and best-practice on red squirrel conservation issues for landowners, conservationists, statutory officials and the general public. The group works at the UK level and liaises closely with the country groups to deliver action on a local level. The group works under these Terms of Reference (PDF-25K). For decades, volunteers have been taking the ferry to Brownsea Island off the Dorset coast, and chopping down rhododendron bushes. They might look beautiful when they flower, but the bushes tend to choke off all other growth, including the plants and trees that carry the squirrels' food. Around 15,000 people, from cub scouts to pensioners, have helped Dorset Wildlife Trust clear its side of the island, and now, the last bush faces the chainsaw today. "When we first came here in 1962... you could hardly walk around the island at all... the land was really dying because of the rhododendrons.

The red squirrel is native to Britain, but its future is increasingly uncertain as the introduced American grey squirrel expands its range across the mainland.

Red Squirrels

There are estimated to be only 140,000 red squirrels left in Britain, with over 2.5 million greys. The Forestry Commission is working with partners in projects across Britain to develop a long-term conservation strategy that deters greys and encourages reds. Name Red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) Lifestyle Habitat Red squirrels build large nests, called dreys, often in the forks of tree trunks. Breeding Red squirrels produce young, called kittens in the spring and can reproduce a second time in the summer if conditions are right.
