Ari's Take: CD Baby, Tunecore, DistroKid, Ditto, Mondotunes, ReverbNation, Zimbalam or... This is the most comprehensive and accurate digital distribution review comparison piece on the web. By far. I checked. Who is the best digital distributor? Read on... I updated this full report on 11/17/15. I sat down with reps at 9 different digital distribution companies, CD Baby, DistroKid, Ditto Music, Loudr, Mondotunes, ReverbNation, Symphonic, Tunecore and Zimbalam for this review, to get a full in-depth look at each company and for the reps to explain to me their company's best features (that I may have missed scanning their FAQ). This review is just taking a look at companies that will get your music into digital stores and streaming services, like iTunes, Spotify, Google Play, etc and NOT about stand alone, digital download, self-managed stores, like BandCamp.

I also left out distribution companies who only work with labels (like The Orchard). Full disclosure, I should say, I have used CD Baby, Tunecore, DistroKid and Loudr to release my music in the past. CD Baby Review: Best:

By Darcie-Nicole Wicknick Special to MusicBizAdvice.com A common misconception about recording artists is that they’re the ones who make the money (after the labels). I have to break it to you: that’s not the case. The real money comes from being a songwriter. The first thing you need to know about sources of songwriting income is the role of the performance rights society. Think of a song being worth 200% rather than 100%. Early on in your career, you do not need to sign up with a Publishing Company; in many cases, getting a publishing deal with a company is as difficult as getting a recording contract, and is often as involved.

In a Full Publishing Deal, the Publisher owns your copyright for a negotiated Term (length of time) and owns half of the royalties from licenses and revenue. In a Co-Publishing Deal, the Publisher is entitled to some of the copyright for the negotiated Term, usually fifty percent. There are many sources from which writers can collect royalties. The big winners in Sunday night's Grammy Awards took many by surprise. Arcade Fire took home the record of the year for "The Suburbs" and the country group Lady Antebellum's song "Need You Now" won awards for best record and best song of the year.

The former is from Montreal, the latter hail from Nashville. The internet and social media exploded with a raft of incredulous messages - - a Tumblr called "Who is Arcade Fire? " compiled dozens of them. Could these wins reflect something of a broader trend? My team and I have been involved in an ongoing project to track the changing dynamics and geography of the popular music industry. The top ranked city is Nashville, which is literally off the chart.

Nashville has become a major force in the music business. Over the past several decades, Nashville transformed itself from a rather narrow country music outpost in the 1960s and 1970s into a major center for commercial music. The effects of this extend far beyond music per se. Pro Band Websites in Minutes | Bandzoogle. Powerful reports that let you discover trends, track buzz, and see how engaged your fans are. Author David Meerman Scott made a honest and realistic quote, “if you want 20,000 fans you must do 2000 different things that each generate 10 fans.” This was my favorite quote from 2010 and I am going to take this on as a challenge for 2011 for an ambitious project to give you 2000 different things you can do to generate 20,000 fans. I am defining generating fans in a few different ways: A brand new fan who has never followed you before.Engaging with existing fans to get them to participate.Engaging with existing fans to get them to convert on an action.

Some of these items will apply better for larger acts, some items will work for any act.
