01.1 History of Photograpy and Composition(Photo1)

" The photographic process has experienced a slow and steady progression for several hundred years. No one person is credited for the invention of the photographic process. There were many successes and many failures along the way. I will give a short summary of the history of photography that will lead up to today's current processes. The first "camera" was called a camera obscura .

History of Photography Continued In 1725, Johann Schulze discovered that a combination of silver salts and silver nitrate would turn dark when exposed to light. History of Photography Continued William Talbot of England in 1835 made negative images on treated paper. Even though there have been many in the process since then, this is the main idea behind today's photographic process. Not only did the photographic process improve, so did camera a lens design. Eastman introduced the Kodak Brownie about 1890. 1.

The Development of the Camera. The very earliest roots of photography date back to the 16th century when artists and scientists found that when light passed through a small hole in a wall of a dark room an inverted image appeared on the opposite wall. The replacement of the hole with a lens made the projected image brighter and sharper and by the 18th century the room became a portable box, used by artists as a sketching aid. In 1727 it was discovered by Johann Heinrich Schulze that silver halides and certain other chemicals turn dark when light hits them. About 1800 the first unsuccessful attempt to record an image using chemicals was made by Thomas Wedgwood. Rules of civility - first came love. I've started a book recently called "Rules of Civility" by Amor Towles and I can't seem to put it down. The book begins with a gallery opening of Walker Evans subway portraits "Many are Called". Using a hidden camera, Evans snapped unsuspecting passengers traveling around the city. These images are hauntingly beautiful. In the book, Towles describes the subway commute from the perspective of a woman in the 1930's. "Anyone who has ridden the subway twice a day to earn their bread knows how it goes: When you board, you exhibit the same persona you use with your colleagues and acquaintances. . - excerpt from "Rules of Civility" by Amor Towles photo credits here, here and here.
