Trauma Then and Now Jasna Koteska The study “Trauma Then and Now: From Charcot to Hollywood” by Jasna Koteska is a historical reading of the complex notion of trauma, from its medical beginnings in the 19th century French neurology and its obsession with the maladies of memory (1880-1900) via Freud’s and Janet’s differences in readings of one’s relation to one’s past (Freud’s notable idea of the need to remember the traumatic scene “as it once happened” to Janet’s attempts to “manipulate” i.e. erase the traumatic encounters in order to remove their pathological elements from the human psyche) to the most recent cultural and neurological developments in the contemporary trauma studies.
