Last Friday's poll, by YouGov, suggests that 43% of Brits would vote to leave the EU, if there was a referendum, compared to 38% who would vote to remain. 15% said they ‘don’t know’ and 4% said they would not vote.

Excluding these two means that 53% of Brits would vote to leave, whilst 47% would vote to remain in the union. YouGov questioned 1641 GB adults between the 20th and 26th November, for the poll released last Friday. It confirms that Euroscepticism has become a major force in Britain, but if those advocating an exit wish to succeed more will need to be done to convince the 15% who are not sure, likewise so will those wanting to stay in. Nonetheless, there is a clear majority of Brits wanting to see some major changes in the EU. A total of 64% of Brits questioned think that quotas should be imposed to limit the amount of EU migration to the UK, whilst just 22% opposed the idea. The survey also questioned citizens from France, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway.

How Scotland's independence movement is changing the UK

After throwing a scare into the country’s political elite, Scots voted in September against independence. But by seriously considering breaking up the country, Scotland has helped launch a debate that may fundamentally change how America’s closest ally functions. Think of the issue as a British version of the U.S. struggle to define where Washington’s power ends and state authority takes over. Or as an illustration of how the desire to express a national character and exert local control doesn’t go away — even absent the poverty and repression that encourages so many independence movements around the world.

Many Scots have felt increasingly at odds with the UK’s national government for decades. Ethnically diverse Emoji are coming. If you ever thought that those ubiquitous emoji that littered people's texts and messages spoke little for ethnic diversity, there's some good news.

The former Conservative MP finished eight points clear of the Tories, with a majority of almost 3,000. This might look convincing enough to encourage other disgruntled Tories to switch sides before the general election. The result is significant for many reasons but the most important is demography. This annual event took place just last month with relatively little fanfare from the news media, which is, from an epidemiological standpoint, a very good thing. Every year, public health officials wring their hands at the thought of possible outbreaks caused by the global pathogen du jour capitalizing upon the convergence of millions of worshipers in the Saudi Arabian desert. SARS stole the headlines in 2009, Middle Eastern Respiratory Virus or MERS had it last year, and Ebola seemed a likely contender for this calendar year. The Ministry of Health in Saudi Arabia is acutely aware of the risks inherent to such a huge convention of human bodies, with one Deputy Minister noting that “no other mass gathering can compare, either in scale or in regularity” (1).
