Il a été conçu de façon à évaluer les facteurs cognitifs en jeu dans l’apprentissage du langage écrit, soit les capacités de traitement phonologique, d’attention visuelle et de mémoire lexicale orthographique, immédiate et différée. L’épreuve comprend aussi une tâche visant à évaluer les compétences orthographiques dont disposent les apprentis scripteurs. Il s’agit de la tâche d’orthographe approchée. L’ODLÉ peut être administré à partir du mois d’avril en maternelle jusqu’à la fin de septembre de la 1re année. Il est conçu pour être administré en groupe.
