How To Encourage People To Change Their Own Minds

http://www.spring.org.uk/2012/05/how-to-encourage-people-to-change-their-own-minds.php We resist having our attitudes adjusted by others, especially when the message isn't directly relevant to us and we aren't paying that much attention. But what if you could get people to change their own minds? People will listen to themselves and will automatically generate arguments that have personal relevance for them. When we want to change our behaviour, say, to healthier eating, we might try to convince ourselves we don't like the forbidden foods as much as we do. So, there are all kinds of situations in which we are arguing with ourselves, whether it's because we've initiated it ourselves, or because we've been subtly encouraged to do so by someone else. But does it work?

In a recent New Yorker, I profiled Roger Thomas, the head of design for Wynn Resorts. Thomas is a remarkably talented interior designer – he’s received nearly every accolade in the field – but I was most interested in the way Thomas has reinvented the modern casino, creating lovely and relaxing spaces that encourage people to squander their cash. (I’ve long believed that success in Vegas requires an intimate understanding of human nature – it’s not easy getting people to enjoy games that are stacked against them.) Here’s the lede: On a clear December afternoon, Roger Thomas was completing a four-month renovation of the high-limit slot-machine room at the Wynn Las Vegas resort. http://www.wired.com/wiredscience/2012/03/the-psychology-of-casinos/

Jazz scale - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A jazz scale is any musical scale used in jazz . Many "jazz scales" are common scales drawn from Western European classical music , including the diatonic , whole-tone , octatonic (or diminished), and the modes of the ascending melodic minor. All of these scales were commonly used by late nineteenth and early twentieth-century composers such as Rimsky-Korsakov , Debussy , Ravel and Stravinsky , often in ways that directly anticipate jazz practice. [ 2 ] Some jazz scales, such as the bebop scales, add additional chromatic passing tones to the familiar diatonic scales.

She now has nearly 13,000 followers on the popular online social networking service Twitter and manages various daily psychology blogs. Greenberg, who grew up in South Africa and earned a doctorate from Stony Brook University in New York, specializes in weight loss, obesity, trauma and "mindfulness" therapy, which is based on Buddhist concepts. ‘Open Science’ Challenges Journal Tradition With Web Collaboration - NYTimes.com

For centuries, this is how science has operated — through research done in private, then submitted to science and medical journals to be reviewed by peers and published for the benefit of other researchers and the public at large. But to many scientists, the longevity of that process is nothing to celebrate. The system is hidebound, expensive and elitist, they say. Peer review can take months, journal subscriptions can be prohibitively costly, and a handful of gatekeepers limit the flow of information.

Why Are So Many Kids Committing Bullycide? | Psychology Today

Amanda Cummings, suicide victim It's relentless. Virtually every week the media informs us about another new tragedy of a young person taking his or her own life because they could no longer tolerate being bullied. Our country has been intensively combating bullying for a dozen years, since the Columbine shooting brought the problem of bullying to the nation's consciousness.
Everyone makes mistakes and children are no exception. What's important is how we learn from them. Yet, children grow up in a society that pressures them to be perfect and intelligent - to achieve the highest SAT scores, land prized scholarships, and get into the best universities. Parents reinforce this pressure at home when they cover up children's mistakes, correct homework to improve grades, or drill knowledge into kids until they get it right. Stress is increased when children are constantly praised for their intelligence .
