Krigens orange arv.

REPORT TO TO SECRETARY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS. Report As Reported by Special Assistant Admiral E.R.

REPORT TO TO SECRETARY OF THE DEPARTMENT OF VETERANS AFFAIRS

Zumwalt, Jr. May 5, 1990 On October 6, 1989 I was appointed as special assistant to Secretary Derwinski of the Department of Veterans Affairs to assist the Secretary in determining whether it is at least as likely as not that there is a statistical association between exposure to Agent Orange and a specific adverse health effect. As special assistant, I was entrusted with evaluating the numerous data relevant to the statistical association between exposure to Agent Orange and the specific adverse health effects manifested by veterans who saw active duty in Vietnam.

To assess such studies’ credibility, fairness and consistency with generally accepted scientific practices. I further conclude that the Veterans’ Advisory Committee on Environmental Hazards has not acted with impartiality in its review and assessment of the scientific evidence related to the association of adverse health effects and exposure to Agent Orange. 5 Letter from Dr. 1. Agent Orange Record

Often, when we are talking about the long-term impacts of Agent Orange on human health and the environment, we are actually talking about dioxin. Specifically, the 2,3,7,8-Tetrachlorodibenzodioxin (TCDD),which was an unnecessary contaminant in the 2,4,5-T component of Agent Orange, and several of the other herbicides (Pink, Purple, and Green). Therefore, it is important to have clarity on two terms used throughout this website: Agent Orange — (aka Herbicide Orange) was one of a class of color-coded herbicides that US forces sprayed over the rural landscape in Vietnam to kill trees, shrubs and food crops over large areas.

Agent Orange was a 50/50 mixture of two individual herbicides, 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T. The effects of Agent Orange do, however, persist in the form of ecologically degraded landscapes in parts of the hilly and mountainous areas of Vietnam. Dioxin is not absorbed by plants nor is it water soluble.

Addendum to the Profile (PDF, 1587KB*) Addendum to the Toxicological Profile for Chlorinated Dibenzo-p-dioxins (CDDs) (November 2012) Minimal Risk Levels (MRL) The MRL is an estimate of the daily human exposure to a hazardous substance that is likely to be without appreciable risk of adverse, non-cancer health effects over a specified duration of exposure. The information in this MRL serves as a screening tool to help public health professionals decide where to look more closely to evaluate possible risk of adverse health effects from human exposure. Interaction Profiles Succinctly characterizes the toxicologic and adverse health effects information for mixtures of hazardous substances.
