Bled Island - Slovenia's Fairy Tale Isle

Little wonder when you consider its mild climate and beautiful surroundings. The lake has an island, tear-shaped and the only real island in the virtually land-locked country. When people say that a place is like something from a fairy tale often they are exaggerating. Not with so Bled Island. Formed by a glacier it is every inch worthy of that description. The island is tiny but over the centuries people have wasted no time using virtually every square meter to one purpose or another. As you can imagine the place is popular among couples seeking that romantic place in which to exchange vows. Before this it is said that the Slavic goddess of love and fertility, Ziva, had a temple here.

Traditional wooden row barges call pletna (see above) ferry people to and from the island. As she is carried the wife must stay completely silent or bad luck will descend on their marriage. In recent years, Croatia has changed from a relative unknown to one of the trendiest destinations in Europe. To a great extent this is due to the country's rocky littoral, which, washed by the Adriatic, is considered one of the most beautiful of the Mediterranean coastlines. Then there is the rich history and cultural heritage of medieval towns such as Dubrovnik, Split and Sibenik.

But the well-deserved popularity also depends on the protected natural areas, which make up some ten per cent of the country's area. Eight areas enjoy national park status – a very high number for a relatively small country. Of these, Plitvice is the best known. Stream (Infrared) by David A. Evans. While designers have responded with the likes of lighting, accessories and even fashion made entirely out of old books, French Canadian artist Guy Laramée tackles it from a decidedly philosophical — and creative — perspective, carving intricate, three-dimensional landscapes that look amazingly real up close. Based out of Montréal, Laramée is a multidisciplinary artist, writer, director, composer and anthropologist. "Biblio" and "The Great Wall" are his series of sculpted vintage books, which range from ridged landscapes and Zen gardens to actual archaeological landmarks like the Temple of Petra. While on one level Laramée is finding a good use for obsolete books, there's also a deeper commentary underlying his practice.

Cultures arise, become obsolete, and are replaced by new ones. Laramée's website is an interesting read and visual delight. Highest Points: 20 U.S. National Parks by Elevation [40 PICS] Denali National Park, Alaska, ranks as the #1 highest point of any U.S. national park.

Located 3/4 mile upstream from its confluence with the Pedernales River, Hamilton Creek spills out over limestone outcroppings to create a 50 foot waterfall as it plunges into the head of a steep box canyon. The waterfall never completely dries up, but in dry times it does slow to a trickle. However, the pool’s water level stays pretty constant, even during periods of drought. 15 Amazing Castles from Around the Globe - StumbleUpon. From solid strongholds to oriental fortresses and highly decorative palaces, the castles are our connection to the past, where legends mix with history and reality blends with a fairyland. This fairytale castle is the historical seat of the Prussian Kings and German Emperors. Its origin dates back to the Middle Ages - it was built in the 11th century, then completely destroyed in 1423 and reconstructed in 1461.
