British Library's wi-fi service blocks 'violent' Hamlet. 13 August 2013Last updated at 11:12 ET By Joe Miller BBC News Readers in the British Library can use the building's wireless network A man using the British Library's wi-fi network was denied access to an online version of Shakespeare's Hamlet because the text contained "violent content". Author Mark Forsyth was writing his book in the library, and needed to check a line from the famous play.
The British Library said the fault was caused by a newly installed wi-fi service from a third-party provider. One security expert said the incident highlighted the "dysfunction" of internet filters. Mr Forsyth revealed on his blog that the filter had logged his attempt to access the page. A spokesperson for the British Library said Hamlet had since been made accessible. "The upgraded service has a web filter to ensure that inappropriate content cannot be viewed on-site," he added. "We've received feedback from a number of users about sites which were blocked, but shouldn't have been.

For IPW Subscribers Monthly Reporter. Icann launches brand database for trademarks. 26 March 2013Last updated at 10:09 ET Firms are concerned that new web addresses will damage their brands Net address regulator Icann has launched a database to allow businesses to register their brands, ahead of the release of a raft of new domain names. It is hoped the Trade Mark Clearing House (TMCH) will mitigate concerns about cyber-squatting and trademark infringement. Nearly 2,000 new suffixes, known as generic top-level domains (gTLD), will be introduced later this year.
Businesses fear that new addresses will compromise their brands. Suffixes such as .bet, .web. .news will become available from May as alternatives to the well-known .com and .org. Icann's (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) TMCH will offer companies priority registration for domain names that match their brands during what is known as the "sunrise" period before the names are offered to the general public.
"New top-level domain names present a land of opportunity, but there are also threats. Book publishers blast Amazon's plan to control domain names | Internet & Media. Amazon's effort to control dozens of new generic top-level Internet domain names is drawing fire from a pair of publishing industry groups. The Authors Guild and the Association of American Publishers oppose the Internet retail giant's plan to control so-called generic top-level domains (gTLD) that end in suffixes .book, .author, and .read, arguing that such influence would be anti-competitive. "Placing such generic domains in private hands is plainly anticompetitive, allowing already dominant, well-capitalized companies to expand and entrench their market power," Authors Guild President Scott Turow wrote to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, or ICANN, the nonprofit that oversees the world's Internet domain names.
"The potential for abuse seems limitless. " B&N added, "Amazon's ownership would also threaten the openness and freedom of the Internet and would have harmful consequences for Internet users worldwide. FAQ | .CO vs. .COM and more. .COM is the legacy domain extension with more than 100 million registrations. Stick with .com if you're OK with the status-quo. .CO on the other hand is fresh, shorter, social, and... it's available! With an increasing number of people web browsing on mobile devices, the need for short and memorable web addresses has never been so important. In essence, if you want something innovative and cutting edge, go with .CO. Domain extensions like .info, .mobi, .org and .tv enjoy specific niche markets, which is great if that is what you need for your online branding. .CO is different in that it is more general in meaning and not niche specific. .CO is registered just like all the other domain extensions.
You can get it from domain retailers (a/k/a registrars) for one year or multiple years in advance. As long as you renew your .CO web address, it's yours to keep. ^ Back to top. .CO Internet SAS | The .CO Registry. .co. .co is the Internet country code top-level domain (ccTLD) assigned to Colombia. It is administered by .CO Internet S.A.S.[3] As of July 10, 2010[update], there are no registration restrictions on second-level .co domains; any individual or entity in the world can register a .co domain. .co has become increasingly popular among tech innovators, entrepreneurs and startups in Silicon Valley and worldwide, including AngelList (angel.co), 500 Startups (500.co), VINE (vine.co), Flagship Mobile (flagshipmobile.co), Jelly (jelly.co), Brit + co (brit.co) among others.
The .co domain is also used by many big brand innovators for social and mobile media, such as Twitter (t.co), Google Inc. (g.co), Amazon.com (a.co), American Express (amex.co) and Starbucks (sbux.co). [4] .co domain names are available for registration globally through accredited registrars. In the Domain Name System (DNS), Second Level Domains (SLDs sit below Top Level Domains (TLDs) in terms of the hierarchical order. They appear in the address directly to the left of the TLD, so in the domain name nominet.org.uk, .org.uk is the SLD. Nominet currently only allows registrations at the third level i.e. to the left of the .co.uk or .org.uk. However, this is set to change, as from 10 June 2014, shorter, simpler .uk domains will be available for the first time. For more information on the .uk launch visit the Dot UK Launch homepage. Existing second level domains are commonly used to indicate the type of organisations that the domains belong to.
We currently run two types of SLD under .uk: those that we manage directly and those where we delegate the management to other organisations.
