The first empire to wield power on this scale was Achaemenid Persia in the 6th century BCE. In its heyday, Persia owned land on all three Eurasian continents, being strategically positioned on the silk road as a mediator for Sino-Roman commerce. Years later, Rome itself became the primary Old World superpower.
