Geoffrey Parker's unveils one of the most expensive chess sets at $77,880. A traditional British manufacturer of world’s finest luxury bespoke games for over 50 years, Geoffrey Parker, which relishes the unusual and unique in a world so often full of the ordinary and mundane, has now introduced one of the world’s most expensive chess set, the $77,880 Silver Jubilee Edition Chessboard. Described to be a perfect gift for the discerning chess players this luxurious chess board approved by the United States Chess Federation is actually the re-introduction of the 1960s classic Geoffrey Parker board which was originally created to celebrate Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth‘s Silver Jubilee.

Originating from the 1960s, this Geofrrey Parker design (pictured above) was created not to compete but to impressively compliment the brand Geoffrey Parker’s association with the legendary Staunton design. Now, offered in sterling silver, sterling silver-gilt and even solid gold, the set has notably stood the test of times, and is truly a delight to play with. In 1964 I.A. ("Al") Horowitz published a fat little gem of a book called Chess Openings: Theory and Practice. Let's put this in some historical context, just so you'll understand why I called this book a "gem". The Encyclopedia of Chess Openings (and the later Batsford Chess Openings, and Nunn's Chess Openings) hadn't yet made its appearance.

There were a couple of the now-familiar "encyclopedic" (lots and lots of opening variations in column/table format, each ending in an evaluation provided using symbolic notation) opening books kicking around on the market at that time, most notably Modern Chess Openings and Fine's Practical Chess Openings. So what set Chess Openings: Theory and Practice apart from other opening manuals? Why'd that idea get lost in the shuffle? Unfortunately, many players don't do the "outside bookwork". Now let's jump to 1996.
