Four Ways to Spur Innovation at Your Company. By John Hagel III, John Seely Brown and Lang Davison | 2:32 PM April 29, 2009 For the big German software company SAP, it was a classic chicken-and-egg dilemma. The year was 2003, and SAP was just releasing its new NetWeaver platform–a nifty piece of software that fit on top of and around its existing enterprise applications, helping them talk to each other and to non-SAP applications. SAP was trying to make the most of a then-new way of integrating software called service-oriented architectures, which allow computers to more easily share data and services.

The dilemma was this: the product’s full potential wouldn’t become apparent until customers began using it and discovering what it could do. Yet customers might not adopt NetWeaver–which SAP was essentially giving away as part of its applications–until they could grasp its potential. Even NetWeaver’s early adopters–typically among the most tech-savvy of its customers–were struggling with its basics. 1. 2. 3. 4. TwitchBoard. Connectbeam | Combining Social Bookmarking and Social Networking. Here is another approach to optimizing enterprise 2.0 connections and collaboration. There is always an element of social networking in social bookmarking, but Connectbeam makes this link explicit.

They also provide a unique delivery vehicle as the service comes through a hardware application that stays behind the ftrewall. I recently discussed Connectbeam with its CEO, Puneet Gupta. He said, “Our fundamental belief is that social networking when it comes to businesses and enterprise, has to be front-ended with information access and discovery.” Thus the networking begins around sharing information and social bookmarking comes into play. In addition to individual sharing, Connectbeam allows for group sharing through communities. Connectbeam also wanted to take a novel approach to implementation to be more competitive with the large players entering this space. One of the clients, Rich Hoeg at Honeywell, has written a bit on his Connectbeam experience on his blog, econtent .

Social Bookmarking Apps Provide a New Knowledge Management Platf. Hewlett-Packard will apparently need close to two months to start fulfilling backorders for the (temporarily) revived TouchPad tablet. "It will take 6-8 weeks to build enough HP TouchPads to meet our current commitments, during which time your order will then ship from this stock with free ground shipping," read an email sent to customers and reprinted in a Sept. 7 posting on the Precentral.net blog. "You will receive a shipping notification with a tracking number once your order has shipped. "That would place the new TouchPads in consumers' hands sometime in either late October or early November. The reduced-price devices are not returnable, according to the email.

HP originally acquired webOS as part of its takeover of Palm in 2010. The manufacturer originally had big plans for loading the operating system onto a variety of devices, including tablets, smartphones, desktops and laptops. What Form Is Enterprise Social Software Taking? LiveMarks - SWiK | See What People Are Tagging in Real-time. LiveMarks consists of two parts: an import script and a display script. import , display The import script is run via a cron job. It runs all the time every day, pulling in the del.icio.us RSS feed.

In case del.icio.us feeds are inaccessable, or overflow happens, LiveMarks uses a system of redundant mirrors to maintain a steady stream of bookmarks. RSS Item Uniqueness is a hard problem. Like most aggregator s, LiveMarks uses an imperfect solution that works most of the time: it takes arbitrary uniqueness criteria and anything that doesn’t fit within this criteria is ignored. LiveMark’s uniqueness criteria works as follows: each bookmark has a set of properties that includes an author, a link, and a title. These are hashed and put into a unique hash column in the database. The display script uses AJAX to populate the client bookmark cache without refreshing the page and script.aculo.us and some custom Javascript to get the effect of links scrolling down the page.
