In a white paper released this week, consulting firm McKinsey & Company contends that cloud computing has significant potential, but is still too costly to be a practical option for many large companies. The report encourages caution and urges potential adopters to look beyond the hype and think hard about real value. Cloud computing is a very general term which is used to describe a broad assortment of technologies ranging from Web applications to hosted computing infrastructure. Citing a study which found 22 separate definitions of cloud computing, the McKinsey paper says that the lack of consensus around a single cogent definition is impeding discussion and generating confusion in potential adopters. The paper offers its own definition by identifying several key characteristics of existing cloud computing technology. http://arstechnica.com/business/news/2009/04/mckinsey-warns-against-premature-adoption-of-cloud-computing.ars
