ATOMIC-ANNIHILATION. Enoch Bolles. Ephemera assemblyman. Martin klasch. Men's Adventure Magazines. Last year, I co-wrote an article about “killer creature” man vs. animal themed stories in vintage men’s adventure magazines for HORRORHOUND, a nicely-produced periodical about horror and science fiction movies, books and collectibles. It appeared in HORRORHOUND issue #42 under the title “When Weasels Ripped Our Flesh: Killer Creature Stories in Men’s Adventure Magazines.” I wrote the article with Wyatt Doyle, my co-editor for the series of men’s adventure magazine story anthologies we’re publishing via his indie book company New Texture.

We are both fans of the rip-snorting, often way-over-the-top animal attack stories that were common in men’s pulp adventure magazines published in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s. In fact, we borrowed the title of the most famous men’s pulp mag killer creature story of them all as the title of our first book anthology — WEASELS RIPPED MY FLESH! That story, which is included in our book, was originally published in the September 1956 issue of MAN’S LIFE. PCL LinkDump. Retrospace. THE HORRORS OF IT ALL. Starlet Showcase. Vintage Pulchritude. John's Forbidden Planet. Blonde Zombies. The Haunted Closet. Parents in the early 1980s sure had a lot to worry about. Role-playing games were psychologically scarring children with their occult-based fantasy worlds (as depicted in the infamous Jack Chick tract Dark Dungeons and the TV adaptation of Rona Jaffe's Mazes and Monsters, teen suicide and devil worship was being encouraged by subliminal messages hidden in heavy metal music, and an increasingly popular phenomenon, the video arcade, was spreading across suburbia like an STD, threatening to infect once-safe mini-malls.

Yes, there was a time when video arcades held a reputation, in certain circles of worried parents and concerned citizens, as being unsavory dens of vice, where kids skipped school to engage in the antisocial and addictive hobby of gaming in an environment of unhealthy high-score one-upsmanship that was constantly threatening to escalate into violence. Twisted Vintage. 50s. I'm Learning To Share! Not much of a mystery, and a mystery no longer. Mysteries are only mysteries until they're not. Here's the story: Perhaps ten years ago, my friend Eric gave me a framed photograph, the one pictured here. Eric was once in the habit of giving me odd items he'd found in thrift stores or flea markets as gifts. Xmas, birthdays, there'd be a black velvet painting of a praying toddler, or a yellow 1970's piggy bank that looked like a pop-art Picasso-esque bull. "I thought this was cool, but I don't want it in MY place", he'd say. You get the idea. This photo was baffling, not just to me, but to everyone who saw it. 'Okay, it looks like a publicity shot... but who IS that guy?

...it was frustrating, and so it went for a long time. A month or so ago I did a double-take when I thought I saw the actor in an old TV rerun, and so started some preliminary research. (WARNING: Beware of pop-ups when playing this video!) Duh. The actor is Ronald Long. Some things are best left a mystery. The Percy Trout hour. John K Stuff. Art Deco. Gloria's Oversexed Mind. Today brings news that Ariel Castro, the Ohio pedophile who kidnapped and tortured three young girls for years, has killed himself in prison. This of course saves taxpayers money, as many people say, but also deprives victims of the justice they seek, as law enforcement likes to point out. via Auto-erotic asphyxiation possible in Castro death - Yahoo! NewsThe report from the Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction suggests — but does not conclude — that Castro may have died as the result of auto-erotic asphyxiation, whereby individuals achieve sexual satisfaction while choking themselves into unconsciousness.Castro's pants and underwear were pulled down to his ankles when he was found Sept. 3 in his cell at a prison reception center south of Columbus, the report said.

It's that final quote that got me -- "no evidence of serious mental illness. " Truly, this baffles me. BAD MAGS :: homepage - The Flip-Side of Popular Culture As Seen Through Magazines and Tabloids! The main reason I wrote Bad Mags was because I wished I had had something comparable when I started looking for and collecting these magazines--a guide if you will. Because Bad Mags attempts to cover such a large selection of subject matter any chapter included in it could have been its own book. Bad Mags is not a complete listing of the magazines and tabloids covering these particular subjects (if such a thing were possible), but is an attempt to give a more complete picture of what was published concerning them at the time. Beyond that Bad Mags is a book devoted to strange, bizarre and peripheral magazines because the back alleys of the publishing industry have been little explored in print.

In most cases there isn't any information readily available, limited only to the information given in the periodical itself. Bad Mags is a compilation of titles, each one a small time capsule from hither and yon, that ended up under my scrutiny. This web site went online on June 6, 2004.
