U.S. Releases Enhanced Shuttle Land Elevation Data On September 23, 2014, the White House announced that the highest-resolution topographic data generated from NASA's Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) in 2000 was to be released globally by late 2015. The announcement was made at the United Nations Heads of State Climate Summit in New York. Since then the schedule was accelerated, and all global SRTM data have been released.

See the full JPL Release 2014-321. Previously, SRTM data for regions outside the United States were sampled for public release at 3 arc-seconds, which is 1/1200th of a degree of latitude and longitude, or about 90 meters (295 feet). See an index map of the newly available full-resolution data. The new data are available for download from the USGS EROS Data Center - see Public Data Distribution for details. ASTER Global Digital Elevation Map Announcement The Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI) of Japan and the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) jointly announced the release of the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) Global Digital Elevation Model Version 2 (GDEM V2) on October 17, 2011.

The first version of the ASTER GDEM, released in June 2009, was generated using stereo-pair images collected by the ASTER instrument onboard Terra. ASTER GDEM coverage spans from 83 degrees north latitude to 83 degrees south, encompassing 99 percent of Earth's landmass. The improved GDEM V2 adds 260,000 additional stereo-pairs, improving coverage and reducing the occurrence of artifacts. The refined production algorithm provides improved spatial resolution, increased horizontal and vertical accuracy, and superior water body coverage and detection. Version 2 shows significant improvements over the previous release.
