Tutorial : Sun Rays Quilt Block. Hi everyone!
I had lots of nice compliments (thank you!) About the block I made for Lisa and a few requests for a tutorial on how I made the striped border. So, here's a little tutorial on how I sewed it. I'm naming it the "Sun Rays Block", this block kind of reminds me of the stripes of light you can see when the sun shines through a cloudy day.
The instructions are for a 12.5" block. (My pictures aren't the best, but I guess when you end up sewing really late at night, that happens! Let's get started: Cut a center peice of fabric 8.5" by 8.5" and lots of strips of fabrics to make the striped border around the outside. Here I've started sewing random strips together to start making the border. I placed 2 pieces of tape, 3" apart on my cutting mat, to help me see how my border is looking and if I have a long enough strip sewn on. In this picture, you can see where I was getting a little off on my sewing on the strips. Trim your fabric to a width of 3". Don't unfold and press this side, yet. Innovating Traditional Quilting.

Built in 1/4" seam allowance. Instructions for Use: 1. 2. 3. 4. The Tall Triangle tool will cut triangles for divided rectangles that are 3 times as tall as they are wide. Cutting: Step 1: Cut strips 1/2" wider than the finished height of the Tall Triangle unit (EX: For a finished 6" Tall Triangle unit, cut strips 6-1/2" wide). Step 2: Align the top of the tool at the top of the strip and a line on the tool with the bottom of the strip. Fassetted Mosaic. Kaffe's Mosaic fabric in blue was the ideal border for this quilt I thought. Brandon Mably gave kind permission to show the photo's that inspired this quilt. Kaffe Fassett's latest book release Simple Shapes Spectacular Quilts was where I found the gorgeous quilt he named Facet. The diamond shapes caught my eye from the start, and I loved the colour palette he used for this quilt. Brandon Mably's mosaic wall, photograph found in Simple Shapes Spectacular Quilts (pg 108) So the idea for combining Kaffe's gorgeous quilt and Brandon's fabulous wall began! Tutorial: July star blocks. This is probably the most basic star block. But it is a classic favorite that looks good in any fabric, and is easy to re-size to make smaller or larger. My blocks finish at 11" (10.5" after squaring…if you square them). Start with 8 – 4" background squares, 1 – 4" center square, and 8 – 3" squares for the star points. On 4 of the background squares place a 3" square in a corner right sides together and sew from corner to corner. The tape trick comes in handy again on these blocks. Place another 3" square in an adjacent corner and repeat the steps. Layout your squares again and sew the squares into three rows. Press the seams of each row in opposite directions, and sew the rows together.
The finished block should be 11". 48 blocks (6 in each row, 8 rows) makes a perfect twin size at 60" x 80". Kaleidoscopic Kites Free Quilt Pattern.
