From Lesbos With Love: There’s a “B” in LGBT. This post was submitted by t When I kissed a girl for the first time, I thought I was bi. I had always dated men but when I kissed her, I knew I wasn’t kissing her in the way sorority girls do. I was into it. So I came to the logical conclusion that I was bisexual. I have often heard that bi is just a gay waiting-room. Sure, there are plenty of cases where someone is bi for a while and then realizes they are either gay or straight, and that’s okay. There are also instances where a person will have sexual relations with a person of the same-sex but only date (or plan to marry) someone of the opposite sex. I have heard that some people are uncomfortable with dating a bisexual individual because they’re worried that person will miss the other gender.

Whether a person is confused, who they sleep with versus date, or what they like in general, does not negate the fact that there are people who identify as bisexual, period. I have a few friends who are bi. First time here? Bisexuals: putting the B back in LGBT | Marcus Morgan. I'm constantly baffled by the exclusion of bisexuals. I blame bad science, or rather bad scientists. Every year it seems there's a new study on "what makes people gay". Oddly, this is expected to be an on-off switch, and the researchers look in the genes, or the brain or the length of fingers for a sign that one set of people will be queer, now and for always, and another proving the rest will remain 100% straight. It takes a special kind of rigidity of outlook to construct a survey on finger length and decide beforehand there's no middle ground.

But this sort of thinking fuels the mythical status of bi people. Oddly, the only people not confused about bisexuality are the bisexuals themselves, with groups like The Bisexual Index advocating a clearer definition – they simply suggest anyone who is attracted to more than one gender should consider identifying as bi. Why don't we come out? The UK bi scene is out there. Not bad for a phase, eh? Remembering The B in LGBT. In a 2005 article in the New York Times entitled "Straight, Gay, or Lying? Bisexuality Revisited," author Benedict Carey questioned whether true bisexuals really exist.

If the "National Summit on Putting the 'B' in LGBT," the marquee event of Bi Visibility Weekend in June, had anything to say about it, apparently they do. Sheela Lambert, founder of the three-year-old Bi Writers Association (formed in response to that article), put together the conference and the weekend's ancillary events (a reading from Lambda Literary Awards finalists called Bi Lines II and sundry meals at nearby restaurants) to illuminate the ranks of bisexuals for the LGBT community to see, and to try to convince organizations such as the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation to add the "B" to their names. "We're constantly bombarded with articles that say we don't exist and press releases that behave as though we don't exist," griped Lambert.
