Shifting hybrids. Brooklyn NEW YORK suckerPUNCH: describe your project. reynolds DIAZ jr / chris DORSEY: Chelsea has an interestingly diverse mixture of programmatic activity. In this diversity, a constant flux between private and public interfaces resolves in a fragmented spatial matrix. Program increasingly divides as you move away from the Hudson River. As a result, this filtration of program continues throughout the site. Large enclosed spaces provided static spatial formations in the form of a performance hall. sP: what or who influenced this project? rD+cD: Hina Jamelle, Ali Rahim, Adam Hostetler, H. sP: what were you reading/listening to/watching while developing this project? rD+cD: Gilles Deleuze – The Logic of Sensation, Jacques Derrida – The Animal That Therefore I Am, The Black Keys, Karate, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan sP: whose work is currently on your radar? rD+cD: Contemporary Architecture Practice, MONAD Studio, SU11, Ruy Klein, Xefirotarch.

Logic matter. Cambridge MASSACHUSETTS suckerPUNCH: describe your project. skylar TIBBITS: Logic Matter: Digital Logic as heuristics for physical self-guided-assembly Given the increasing complexity of the physical structures surrounding our everyday environment; buildings, machines, computers and almost every other physical object that humans interact with, the processes of assembling these complex structures are inevitably caught in a battle of time, complexity and human/machine processing power. If we are to keep up with this exponential growth in construction complexity we need to develop automated assembly logic embedded within our material parts to aid in construction. In this thesis I introduce Logic Matter as a system of passive mechanical digital logic modules for self-guided-assembly of large-scale structures. sP: what or who influenced this project?

Liverpool One: Interchange, Bridge and Car Park | Projects | WilkinsonEyre.Architects. The Paradise Street Development Area - Liverpool One - in Liverpool forms a key part of the city’s regeneration. The new developments have created an enhanced public realm and a series of exciting new leisure, retail and interchange facilities, providing improved clarity in pedestrian and transport links between the city centre and the new Arena and Convention Centre at King’s Waterfront - also designed by Wilkinson Eyre. This pedestrian bridge is Wilkinson Eyre’s final project in the Paradise Street development, and links the practice’s car park with a major department store building.

It provides an enclosed link for pedestrians between the two, offering a dramatic and contemporary entrance experience for shoppers. The bridge is constructed from fabricated steel plate and is extensively glazed, the materials emphasising its unique ‘folded’ geometric form. Careful lighting design also enhances the geometry, the bridge appearing to glow by night. Date: June 2008 Location: Liverpool, UK Value:

Living bridge by Wilkinson Eyre Architects. Here are a few photographs of the Living bridge in Limerick, Republic of Ireland, by London-based architects Wilkinson Eyre. Crossing the river Shannon in five spans, the deck width fluctuates along the length of the bridge to allow for resting places or public art displays. The bridge was completed in November last year. Here's some more information from Wilkinson Eyre: Living Bridge This bridge is a small component of the University of Limerick’s ambitious plans for expansion to the north of the River Shannon, yet assumes a strategic importance that transcends its physical presence.

The design grows from the site, an organic response to a natural environment. This span arrangement is a pragmatic response to the founding opportunities within the river, placing piers on the riverbanks, wooded islands and pool edges. The deck width ‘pulses’ along its length, offering wider platforms to be used as resting places or spaces for public art. Engineers: Ney & Partners Location: Knokke, Flanders, Belgium Client: Flemish Community Project length: 110 m Budget: $1,700,000 euro Construction year: 2004–2007 Photographer: Daylight Situated on the Queen Elisabeth Avenue, connecting Knokke with Ostende, this pedestrian bridge full fills two functions. On the one hand, the bridge connects the sea dike with a green zone in the “Polders”, creating tourism possibilities for cyclists and pedestrians.

On the other hand the bridge symbolizes the entrance into the marine city of Knokke Heist. The static model is a continuous beam with 102m length that rests on 4 supports. This creates an ideal span division of 28m/46m/28m. The structural form was first hand sketched, then digitally processed: a software program computed the minimum amount of material required and thus the shapes of the openings. Maribor Footbridge Proposal by Ja Studio & Tadj-Farzin Studio. Just a few days ago, we posted the fascinating entry for a footbridge by Family as part of the ‘EPK - DRAVA RIVER 2012’ competition in Maribor, Slovenia.

Following is another very exciting bridge proposal by Toronto-based Ja Studio in collaboration with Tadj-Farzin Studio. Click above image to enlarge The Drava Experience Crossing the new pedestrian Lent-Tabor Bridge would be as important as spending time on it. The spontaneity of use The bridge is designed as a 15m wide surface that can create a variety of experiential condition between people and Drava. The image of Drava is the reflection of Maribor and the bridge.

After some experiments with glue we found the solution by bundling-up the roads. Simultaneously we were looking in workshops and structural engineering for a flexible and parametric bridge-system that we could integrate in our design. We had to fit our system to the entire design. Backbone Bridge. Mixed-use Building, NYC : andrewgierke.com. FOLDING BRIDGE. This post is a sneak preview of the design research developed withing the Lightness Workshop of Msc2 Design Studio (Spring 2010) directed by Marco Verde Eng, March at HYPERBODY, Faculty of Architecture at the Delft University of Technology.

The component design was achieved by Xing Wang. This is a Workshop for Msc 2 Master student of Hyperbody. The research topic is using folded flat pieces to make a self-supported bridge without extra material. We start with a single component of the bridge and looking for the certain folding logic. After folding the flat material, every component should generate a 3d volume that can sustain enough pressure, tension and moment; and the component should have a certain variable to control its deformation. When all the components being organized together, they can work as a complete bridge structure.

In this project, we use 0.5mm white plastic panel as material, two 8cm screws in the middle of the component are the variables to control the deformation. ENDLESS BIO-ANARCHIA. Applications.
