Comic and Animation Museum by MVRDV. Dutch studio MVRDV have won a design competition to build a Comic and Animation Museum in Hangzhou, China, formed of eight giant balloon-shaped forms. Each balloon will contain a different function within the museum, including two exhibition spaces that will display cartoons, comics and animations. The permanent exhibition space will spiral out of its chamber and on through the building to connect with three auditoriums and a comic book library. Where balloons touch an opening is created internally, allowing views between spaces. The Museo Soumaya is constructed of 28 steel curved columns with different diameters and geometries, which create its irregular form. The building widens at the top, where a roof suspended from a cantilever allows natural daylight onto the top floor gallery. The museum will house over 6,200 Latin American artworks in a continuous exhibition space spread across six storeys, as well as an auditorium for 350 people, a library, offices, a restaurant, a gift shop and a lounge.

Above: Brother Klaus Field Chapel, 2007 Wachendorf, Eifel, Germany The field chapel dedicated to Swiss Saint Nicholas von der Flüe (1417–1487), known as Brother Klaus, was commissioned by farmer Hermann-Josef Scheidtweiler and his wife Trudel and largely constructed by them, with the help of friends, acquaintances and craftsmen on one of their fields above the village.

The interior of the chapel room was formed out of 112 tree trunks, which were configured like a tent. In the autumn of 2006, a special smouldering fire was kept burning for three weeks inside the log tent, after which time the tree trunks were dry and could easily be removed from the concrete shell. Baku Azerbaijan a land uncharacterized by any singular architectural style is the setting for Zaha Hadid’s latest opus, The Heydar Aliyev Cultural Centre. A government commissioned work, the project was heralded as a building of national importance given Baku’s attempt to host the 2016 Olympics.

With the bid coming and going to Rio de Janeiro, the Cultural Centre continues on as a landmark for Azerbaijan’s capital city as well as a symbol of the country’s emergence amongst the world’s wealthiest. The curvilinear form is engendered from the manipulation of the landscape’s natural topography. The skin undulates across the site, wrapping the various spaces before folding into the interior to become ground. With the floors cascading from one to another, and then connecting to the ramps, the circulation embodies the generative qualities of the skin, creating a continuous path across the interior.

Coldefy & Associates (CAAU) beat out 162 international proposals for the commission of the new Hong Kong Design Institute (HKDI) campus at Tiu Keng Leng. An institute fostering symbiosis between creative and technical design, the winning entry required a reimagining of the interpenetration amongst the multiple disciplines. The purposive iconography created by CAAU goes beyond the deliverables, endeavoring to be the largest state-of-the-art educational design facility in Hong Kong. The architecture abandons the traditional educational hierarchy, splitting the site vertically into two zones, sky city and the legs of education.

This strategy stages a heaven -earth dichotomy between capricious interchanges above, and staged discourses below. The result is a dynamic collegiate environment; a two-storied extrusion of the ground atop four towers. Communal areas, a library and resource centre lie within the extrusion, with the towers housing teaching spaces and vertical circulation. Galleria Centercity by UNStudio. Foster + Partners have completed two modular headquarters for Moroccan bank BMCE in Rabat and Casablanca, Morocco. The design comprises a concrete frame enclosed by glazed panels, covered by screens made of cut and curved sheet steel. The double-height entrance hall of each building features a bank of seating connected to the domed roof by a swooping ribbon of concrete. Offices and meeting rooms are arranged on two floors in the remainder of the building. Each branch is organised on a modular grid, to be repeated and adapted according to location. The Ecological Wall is a project designed by Polish architecture student Stanislaw Mlynski for an international competition organized by National Taipei University of Technology (NTUT) School of Architecture.

“I proposed to create structural wall using organic waste containers. I believe that arrangement of elements, as well as their shape have potential to create shelters for animals, gather water, reduce CO2 . The solar system has the aim to ensure energetic independence. The subject of my interest was every -existing or built in the future- useless, dirty, not-adapted city wall.

Organic waste are nearly 40% of our dust bins and composting is one of the easiest and cheapest ways of recycling. Designed by Meridian 105 Architecture, Lincoln Mixed Use is a proposal for an urban mixed-use complex in Denver, CO, consisting of a hotel, retail, parking structure, restaurant, and movie theater. The building is sited on a transition lot between high-rise residential and a primary commercial corridor running through the city. Overlapping, cross circulation is established onsite, easing visitors through the various program uses between these two zones.

The building enclosure employs an aggressive energy strategy, with the hotel facade designed to perform as a twin glazed assembly, but consisting of prefabricated window units in lieu of labor intensive curtainwall installation. The units have densely fritted top and side panels angled to resist solar gain into the cavity during the summer, while allowing it to heat the shell in the winter. The facade is naturally vented in the summertime by the heat stack effect, with air intake at the base and exhaust at the top.
