Now, a team of scientists say they are "95%" sure that Russia's wintry expanse is home to the mythical yeti, otherwise known as the abominable snowman. More than a dozen scientists and yeti enthusiasts flew in from Canada, Estonia, Sweden and the US to exchange findings with their Russian counterparts at a day-long conference in the town of Tashtagol, some 2,000 miles east of Moscow in the Kemerovo region. Locals there have reported an increase in sightings of a creature in recent years. A two-day expedition to the region's Azassky cave and Karatag peak over the weekend "collected irrefutable evidence" of the yeti's existence there, the Kemerovo government claimed in a statement. "In one of the detected tracks, Russian scientist Anatoly Fokin noted several hairs that might belong to the yeti," it added.

The real-life Indiana Jones is Kiwi adventurer Mike Allsop, who is negotiating for the return to Nepal of skeletal remains that locals say are from a yeti. The remains – stolen from a Nepal monastery in the 1950s – were discovered late last year in a vault at the London-based Royal College of Surgeons. Results from DNA testing undertaken as part of a recent BBC documentary indicated that they were most likely of human origin. But yeti believers in Nepal are adamant they are from the mythical abominable snowman. Allsop is an Auckland-based Air New Zealand pilot who conquered Mt Everest four years ago and was the public face of a global campaign to find other skeletal artefacts.

"I am in contact with the Royal College of Surgeons and its professor who looks after all the archives," Allsop said. "I would definitely be keen. "I am offering to go to reclaim them. Some say they're living beings, and an international group of scientists are about to go hunting for one -- specifically, the Siberian Snowman. Around the world, there have been reports of large, hairy, human-like creatures. Known variously as Bigfoot, Sasquatch, the Abominable Snowman and the Siberian Snowman, none of the elusive animals have ever been captured to confirm their existence. But cryptozoologists -- researchers who study the alleged existence of unknown animals -- say eyewitness accounts, photographs, films, videos, footprints, hair and even fecal material all suggest the possibility of an unknown species that doesn't seem to want to be discovered.

That may all change, as scientists from the U.S., Russia and other countries come together this week for a conference that will include a trek to the Siberian region of Kemerovo to hunt for the alleged snowman. Loading Slideshow.
