Activities This orangutan volunteer programme is designed to support International Animal Rescue, by helping with the build of a fully functional orangutan rescue and rehabilitation sanctuary in the middle of Indonesia's lush jungle. New Construction at the centre Volunteers work at IAR’s temporary wildlife conservation and rescue centre in Ketapang, on the construction of the much-needed, new orangutan sanctuary. With the centre expanding, volunteers may partake in helping to erect electric fences and mix concrete to make bases for new cages to stand on. Also the building of boardwalks and bridges to make access easier for personnel and new climbing towers and feeding platforms for the orangutans in the forest school areas. Maintenance Due to the damp tropical nature of the area and the boisterousness of the orangutans, boardwalks and towers often need general upkeep and repair.

The insides of buildings need repainting and cages regularly need their structural enrichment changed. Cheetah Experience | Volunteer Opportunities | Tours. Dusty and Jen's Favorites. Anywhere but Here: Kowloon "Anarchy" City. It was the most densely populated place on Earth for most of the 20th century, where a room cost the equivalent of US$6 per month in high rise buildings that belonged to no country. In this urban enclave, “a historical accident”, law had no place. Drug dealers, pimps and prostitutes lived and worked alongside kindergartens, and residents walked the narrow alleys with umbrellas to shield themselves from the endless, constant dripping of makeshift water pipes above.

(c) Greg Girard Ungoverned and unregulated, Kowloon Walled City was for so many years, a stain on the urban fabric of British colonial Hong Kong. This month it has been 20 years since the city was finally demolished and to mark the anniversary, the South China Morning Post published a fascinating and detailed info-graphic, showing what life was like inside the city of darkness… (click to enlarge) – William Gibson, Idoru And then came the refugees, the squatters, the outlaws. “An outlaw place. Full photostory here A living hell? Anywhere but Here: Ponte Tower. When was the last time you felt like complaining to your landlord?

It seems there’s always something disgruntling about where we live (I’m currently annoyed with the workmen in the building who keep blanketing my mobylette in dust), but then you read about a place like the Ponte Tower and suddenly, wherever you’re shacked up doesn’t seem so bad… (c) Flickr Welcome to the Ponte Tower, the 54-storey-high concrete tube that has soared over the skyline of Johannesburg since 1975. Also known as the Ponte City apartments, it’s hard to believe this brutalist design by Manfred Hermer was once one of the most coveted addresses in the city. In the midst of the South African Apartheid, Ponte City was emblematic of the country’s dehumanising system of racial segregation. Here, only wealthy white families were allowed to live in the outward-facing apartments, while the tube’s inner apartments were reserved for their black servants, who lived in permanent gloom. Okay okay, so this 300m² Belle Epoque apartment just minutes from les Places Vendome and Place du Marché Saint-Honoré, may just be a little out of budget, but alas, it’s not for sale– it’s for rent! As in, rent it out for the most incredible night in Paris? Yes, this museum-eque historic apartment can be (temporarily) all yours for a cocktail party/ private event, as a showroom space, for a photo shoot, or whatever creative projects you might have up your sleeve (I know I have a few readers out there that this will probably speak to)… The nine-room haussmann apartment floor plan is in the shape of an O, surrounding the property’s private interior courtyard.

The wooden parquet is original, as well as much of the whimsical and eccentric weathered wall decor. Would this not make the most incredible set for filming? Makes me want to write that movie script for the Paris Time Capsule Apartment ! From the Vault. Let's visit every inch of these Paris Apartments (that you could stay in) Ever since I moved to Paris and became a bit of a blogger on all things Parisian, I’ve come to the understanding that it’s basically everyone’s secret desire to live in a quaint little Parisian apartment at one time in their life.

And it’s true, there’s nothing quite like Parisian apartments; the bohemian pied-à-terres with all the original colored tiling still in tact, the artist’s ateliers with their loft bedrooms and great wooden beams; the elegant wrought-iron railings outside the french windows with views over the smokey grey rooftops of Paris … if only I could look inside them all. So I’ve developed a bit of a peculiar habit which involves perusing apartment rental sites in Paris. I’ve particularly taken a liking to the short-term rental sites which feature fully-furnished apartments for travelers coming to Paris on holiday, looking for something more authentic than a hotel; looking to really live Paris. Additionally, the owner has sprinkled some pieces of her personal artwork about the space adding to the seductive charm of this enchanting apartment.

The Paris Time Capsule Apartment. A Parisian apartment left untouched for over 70 years was discovered in the quartier of Pigalle a few summers ago and I’ve been meaning to share the pictures with you. Time to unlock the vault … The owner of this apartment, Mrs. De Florian left Paris just before the rumblings of World War II broke out in Europe. She closed up her shutters and left for the South of France, never to return to the city again. Seven decades later she passed away at the age of 91. It was only when her heirs enlisted professionals to make an inventory of the Parisian apartment she left behind, that this time capsule was finally unlocked. The team that had the honor of opening what must have been a very stiff old lock for the first time in 70 years, likened the experience to ‘stumbling into the castle of sleeping beauty’.

There is a further twist to the story. What kept her away even after the war? Via The Telegraph, photos by GETTY.
