Cybernated Space-Economy

Please note that the following article was published in 1960 and should not be construed to depict accurately the concerns of Regional Science (nor by implication, Geography) some 40 years on! Robert McDaniel A region, as considered by the regional scientist, is any area possessing homogeneity or interdependence of the phenomena being studied. These phenomena may be economic, geographic, political or social. The Montreal metropolitan area is a region exhibiting a high degree of interdependence among its many activities. Where there is such interdependence, a change in one segment of the regional structure will have repercussions on many others. http://publish.uwo.ca/~mcdaniel/RegSci.html

The adoption of robotic weaponry by the world's advanced militaries is proceeding at an accelerating rate. For an overview see the CBC video documentary at this link . In the following article Anna Mulrine explores the operational and ethical implications of this technology. The Pentagon already includes unmanned drone attacks in its arsenal. Next up: housefly-sized surveillance craft, shape-changing 'chemical robots,' and tracking agents sprayed from the sky.

In May 2006 to mark our 50th Anniversary we cruised the Baltic Sea, visiting the ports of Gdansk, Poland, Stockholm, Sweden, Helsinki, Finland, St. Petersburg, Russia, Tallinn, Estonia, Warnemunde & Rostok, Germany, Copenhagen, Denmark, and Oslo, Norway. Our voyage began in Dover, England, but ended because of heavy seas at the alternate port of Harwich.

Approach to Economic Geography

http://publish.uwo.ca/~mcdaniel/sysanal.html (Commission on College Geography Publication No. 8, Association of American Geographers, 1968.) "The rising tempo of contemporary change is perhaps the most bewildering challenge facing man today. He must either exercise intelligent control over his own destiny or be swept away by blind and run-away forces beyond his reach." (Harold Sackman, Computers, System Science and Evolving Society , Wiley, 1967, p.4) This course in economic geography emphasizes the need for control of the spatial allocation of our resources. It may thus be considered an introduction to geocybernetics , the study of man/machine relationships in the control of spatial organization.
(The content of this paper is presented in a novel format that I would call a "mosaic synthesis". It is characterized by a juxtaposition of quotations, aphorisms and brief, integrative statements which is not governed by strict logic. Marshall McLuhan , in describing (Harold A.) Innis' use of an early version of this style, called it "quantum logic". It is believed to convey more information than traditional linear logic in that it invokes both rational (vertical) and intuitive (lateral) thinking.
