4 publisher approaches to the daily newsletter

Alongside their tumultuous love affair with traffic from social networks, publishers are also reinvesting in using email to hold onto their more dedicated readers. Email may not be the sexiest way to reach audiences, but it works. “There’s still a very strong appetite for email,” said Andrew Jack, head of aggregation and curated content at The Financial Times, which launched its latest daily newsletter, FirstFT, last week. “People want something that’s always there and easy to access. It also gives us a way to push news and comments to readers in a new form.”

But while many publishers are reinvesting in newsletters, they aren’t all going about it in the same way. Here’s the tale of the tape for a handful of the newer and more popular newsletters. The Texas Tribune is 5 years old and sustainable. Now what? The newsroom of The Texas Tribune is buzzing in the waning days of the 2014 election.

The Texas Tribune is 5 years old and sustainable. Now what?

Covering political contests takes a kind of muscle memory, something the nonprofit news site has accumulated since it first appeared in 2009 with the mission of covering politics, policy, and government in the capital of the Lone Star state. Back then, it was little more than a handful of reporters and developers; today, the Trib’s newsroom numbers around 22, the largest statehouse team in Texas, and on election day, reporters will be out covering it all — updating vote totals, livestreaming the end of the governor’s race, and tracking the down-ballot legislative races and issues.

If you’ve worked in a newsroom on election night, it’s a familiar machine. But seven days out from the election, the energy around the newsroom has less to do with campaign season and more with oil and gas. Indeed, The Shale Life is text-light. Flipboard, Circa, And Yahoo Deliver The News. The nearly-forgotten sound of the newspaper landing with a thud on a doorstep is being replaced by the bright chime of a smartphone notification.

Notable among them is the Daily Edition, a collection of links to news stories selected by Flipboard's editorial staff. Flipboard launches version 3.0: Smarter recommendations plus a curated daily newsmagazine. The email will be produced by a new editorial team led by new head of aggregation Andrew Jack, and will be modified to suit readers in different regions and time zones. In a statement, Jack claimed that an “information overload” was driving readers away from content streams in favour of a more specialist aggregations. “In an age of information overload where readers are shying away from the perpetual social media stream, trusted editorial judgement and aggregation is an increasingly valuable convenience for busy readers,” he said.

Ebola Deeply builds on the lessons of single-subject news sites: A news operation with an expiration date

News outlets are scrambling to cover the latest developments in the Ebola outbreak with reporting that can provide background on the spread — and any potential risks — of the disease. It’s a balancing act, made more difficult by the worry and fear that surrounds the potentially deadly virus. When Fox News’ Shepard Smith is telling viewers “do not listen to the hysterical voices on the radio and the television or read the fear-provoking words online,” it’s possible there’s a misinformation problem.

That’s why Lara Setrakian launched Ebola Deeply, the latest entry in her pop-up news business, designed to collect the most recent news and provide context in the coverage of the disease. “There’s a lot of reporting, but the space could use coherence, and that’s what we hope to provide,” said Setrakian, founder of parent News Deeply. Loin du web-doc ou de l’analyse, Ulyces est inspiré des magazines américains de « slow info » (Atavist, ou le magnifique Road & Kingdoms).
