Table de Peutinger
Un article de Wikipédia, l'encyclopédie libre. Table de Peutinger : région d'Arles, Fos-sur-Mer, Marseille, Aix-en-Provence. La table de Peutinger ( Tabula Peutingeriana ou Peutingeriana Tabula Itineraria ), appelée aussi carte des étapes de Castorius , est une copie du XIII e siècle d'une ancienne carte romaine où figurent les routes et les villes principales de l' Empire romain qui constituaient le cursus publicus . Ce document était également connu autrefois sous le nom de table théodosienne [ 1 ] (ou tabula theodosiana ), nom qui fait référence à l'empereur Théodose , car, selon M. d'Aigueperse, une copie affiche des vers faits sous cet empereur [ 2 ] .

Depictions of the future date back to drawings on cave walls and continue as 35 mm film and HTML; Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey basically features an iPad , and yesterday on the Daily Beast, three architecture firms imagined what our cities will look like in 2030 . But surpassing our obsession with the future is a newer fixation on the history of predicting the future ( here’s a cinematic one ), which is the topic of this fall’s issue of Lapham’s Quarterly , which comes out this week.

At the recent 2011 meeting of the American Association for the History of Medicine in Philadelphia I picked up a curious tract on the perils of self-abuse, or onanism. Merely speaking the word in polite company invited rebuke in the nineteenth century, so the author simply entitled his work "The Book without a Title," or Le Livre Sans Titre . It's dated 1830 and is distinguished by the charming (may I use that word in this context?)

It was on this day in 1876 that Alexander Graham Bell, then 29, received a patent for a nice improvement on the telegraph that you and I know as the telephone. At first, Bell holds back the most exciting part of his idea. He details how electrical impulses could be converted into "vibrations of different pitch" without necessarily saying, "You talk in this end and it comes out the other end of a wire!"
