The clock is ticking to March 11th, 2011 when Facebook will no longer allow the creation of new FBML custom tabs/apps . Users will need to switch to iFrames where you basically create your own app and host your own media that’s used to customize any pages. (Important note: any and all custom content you created with the Static FBML app up to and including March 10, WILL continue to be supported .

What? Facebook allows corporate business pages much more freedom to define their space within Facebook than is available on personal profiles. Beyond the simple wall posts, photo galleries, videos and events, businesses are able to create custom tabs which allow them to display all manner of creative content, graphics, games, quizzes and more to keep users engaged. To make the most of custom tabs, business pages should take advantage of the ability to create “Fan Gates” (or “Reveal Tabs”).

Meaghan Edelstein has gained national media attention through her blog, I Kicked Cancer’s Ass, which she started to document her battle with end stage cancer. She is an attorney, the founder of the non-profit organization Spirit Jump, and works for the Global Strategic Management Institute. The year 2011 brought exciting changes to social media marketing, especially when it came to Facebook. One such change is the ability to build customized landing tabs using iFrames, social plugins and geotargeting.
Facebook By Ed Thompson , Published October 7, 2011 Earlier this week Facebook launched a new page measurement which looks at the number of fans who “are talking about” a branded Facebook page. The ‘People Talking About’ metric refers to user-initiated activity on a specific page, which includes posting to the Wall; “liking”, commenting or sharing one of the posts or a piece of content on the page; answering a Facebook Question posed to fans, or mentioning a page in a status update.
Last year, Facebook announced its plan to deprecate FBML as a Facebook page administration platform over time. This March, it followed up this statement with the announcement of a full transition to iFrames, phasing out FBML. Since March, page admins have not been able to create any new FBML apps, but apps which were already in existence remained functional until the deprecation was scheduled to begin. Facebook announced at f8 the official deprecation date of all FBML endpoints: June 1, 2012. This is the date when any remaining FBML modules inside of Facebook will cease to function. As the time has come to fully transition to iFrames and depart from the FBML standard completely, this tutorial will explain how to transition your Facebook pages to iFrames from FBML.
Companies are often on the hunt for more “likes” for their Facebook pages, hoping to get more brand advocates and social media fans. However only 42% of US Facebook users think marketers should interpret a “like” in that way. This data comes from a June 2011 study from ExactTarget , “Subscribers, Fans and Followers: The Meaning of Like,” which found that 25% of US Facebook users disagree that marketers should interpret “like” to mean they are a fan or advocate of the company. Facebook users themselves have some preconceived notions about what to expect when they “like” a company on the site, and among those who do not become brand fans, many are negative. More than half of users expect to be bombarded with messages or ads (54%), while 45% do not want to give companies access to profile information and 31% do not want to push content from a company into friends’ newsfeeds. These possibilities have prevented users from making brand connections on the social networking giant.
If you have a business fan page, y ou want those fans to see your posts, right ? Well, the chart above shows that fan page owners are grossly overestimating how many people they’re reaching through posts. (Note: That chart based on pages that together represent more than 400 million fans; it was complied by PageLever , which is in beta and growing its data set. The PageLever charts rock (they’re much cooler than my lame MS Powerpoint table above), and if you want better Facebook Page insights, you should sign up for their beta.
Are you wondering how to get your updates into your fans Facebook news feeds? Did you know that 90% of the people who click your Facebook fan page don’t come back to your Facebook page? They are more likely to read your content in their own Facebook news feed IF you know how to make sure it shows up there… In this edition of Social Media Examiner TV , Mari Smith explains . After you watch this video, share your feedback and see the show notes below! Get your Facebook updates seen
i Rate This Editor’s note: As of March 30, 2012, Facebook pages will get the Timeline format. The change means you can no longer have a default landing tab. But custom apps will continue to work, including fan gates. Each tab/app still has a unique URL so you can drive traffic from inside or outside Facebook to any ‘landing page’ you wish.
Recent findings from PageLever revealed the reach of your Facebook Page may be far less than you think. The data shows an average of 7.49% of fans view posts on a daily basis. Pages with the largest fan-base are performing the worst while pages with fewer likes are performing the best. Currently, pages with over one million likes have only 2.79% of fans seeing posts daily, while smaller sized pages (1,000 – 10,000 likes) have 9.38% of fans viewing daily.
