What are Complex Systems? The most famous quote about Complex Systems comes from Aristotle who said that "The whole is more than the sum of its parts". Complex systems are systems where the collective behavior of their parts entails emergence of properties that can hardly, if not at all, be inferred from properties of the parts. Examples of complex systems include ant-hills, ants themselves, human economies, climate, nervous systems, cells and living things, including human beings, as well as modern energy or telecommunication infrastructures. Good introductions to complexity can be found in an article by Murray Gell-Mann and also on the Complexity Explained project website. THE WHOLE IS MORE THAN THE SUM OF ITS PARTS. - Aristotle The new Science of Complex Systems is providing radical new ways of understanding the physical, biological, ecological, and social universe.

The economic regions that lead this science and its engineering will dominate the twenty first century by their wealth and influence. Centre for Complexity Science at the University of Warwick. Connecting systems, science and society through: a ground-breaking interdisciplinary research centre pushing the boundaries of knowledge in complexity science; a new generation of scientists trained by the doctoral training centre; the knowledge to understand, control and design complex systems; break-throughs in new applications of complexity science; the solutions to real-world problems with relevant end-user testing; a lively intellectual and practically based environment for complexity science. Subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Android | Google Podcasts | Stitcher | TuneIn | Spotify | More David Krakauer is President and William H. Miller Professor of Complex Systems at the Santa Fe Institute. David’s research focuses on the evolutionary history of information processing mechanisms in biology and culture. This includes genetic, neural, linguistic and cultural mechanisms. The research spans multiple levels of organization, seeking analogous patterns and principles in genetics, cell biology, microbiology and in organismal behavior and society. Max Planck Institute for the Physics of Complex Systems. Institute for Complex Systems and Mathematical Biology (ICSMB) The Institute for Complex Systems and Mathematical Biology (ICSMB) has as its unifying intellectual theme the study of complex dynamics and its applications. Since applications of complex dynamics necessarily involve bridging gaps between abstract concepts, on the one hand, and the scientific disciplines, and engineering, medical and social fields where the applications occur, on the other, the Institute devotes special effort to facilitate cross-disciplinary contact and interaction in order to speed and facilitate progress.

In particular, the theory of complex dynamical systems plays a central role in integrating mathematical developments with biological experiments. The synergistic developments in systems biology research are vigorously promoted and pursued by the Institute, covering a wide range of mathematical approaches used to uncover the general principles and mechanisms governing biological processes and function at all levels. A small group of curious and inquiring faculty, students and members of the community began meeting on the University of Alaska Anchorage Campus in 1998, seeking a means to develop and facilitate discussion among individuals interested in complex systems theory and practice. Their early roundtable discussions back in 1998 were somewhat informal but laid a crucial foundation for the growth of complex systems at UAA.

A formal seminar series was organized and introduced to the campus in January 1999. Our guest lecture series and curriculum development began in 2001 and continues through today. We are beginning to align with industry for problem resolution, and we look forward to continued expansion. "I think the next century will be the century of complexity. "I just returned from the University of Alaska Anchorage and feel like I'm back in the Dark Ages after a glimpse of the Renaissance.
