Some may even know that Waterfall was supposedly “invented” by the paper “Managing the Development of Large Software Systems” by Dr. Winston W. Royce in 1970. But have you ever read it? Why should you? What if I told you that it is the exact opposite? I believe in this concept, but the implementation described above is risky and invites failure. Doesn’t sound so positive, does it? Wait what? Yes back in 1970 the paper, that supposedly invented Waterfall was describing its deficiencies and actually contained some agile thoughts. The reason why I’m bringing all of this up is that it seems that all of this is a little known fact. Revised 2014-03-010. An earlier version appeared in IEEE Transactions on Management. By Marty Schmidt Abstract The Project Management Control Chart (Schmidt Chart) is a tool for monitoring, reporting, and controlling the progress of time-critical projects. Control lines in the plotting space signal high or low probabilities of completing the project on schedule. The progress plot is similar to statistical process control charts used in manufacturing settings. Contents • Introduction: A project progress control chart • Example project progress control chart (Schmidt Chart) • Monitoring project progress and project completion • Estimating project task time means and variances • First analysis: Are you winning or losing project schedule control?
