The presentation was carried out by Gonzalo Reza, director of Technologies for Education at Tecnológico de Monterrey; Eduardo González, director of the Center for Teaching Development and Educational Innovation of the Northern Region of the institution; and Bertha Saldívar, director of Educational Technology Solutions. The tools were furtherly explored by the architects of solutions in educational technology María del Consuelo Cabello, Miguel Pérez, Andrés Juan Luis and Yazmín Hernández.

This is an article about new trends in English language teaching (ELT) resources, but none of the trends that follow are, strictly speaking, new. Take, for example, the idea of spaced repetition, which is a buzzword at the moment. Back in 1885 (I told you it wasn’t a new idea), Hermann Ebbinghaus carried out an experiment designed to measure how quickly we forget.
He discovered that, unless new information is reinforced, we quickly forget what we have learned. So, we’ve known about spaced repetition for quite a while, but it has been difficult to implement, as it involves keeping track of an awful lot of words. I’ve seen how technology motivates learners of all ages to find their voice, connect with language learners around the world, and have access to knowledge and resources in multiple languages.
I’ve taught in really poor areas where sometimes the electricity didn’t work. I’ve also taught refugees who came to class in the same clothes everyday. In all cases technology helped them improve their language skills, because it offered them ways to practice English outside the classroom in ways that engaged them. Not all students have access to the best technology, but the majority can and will find ways to use technology and connect with others on the Internet. The challenge is to turn this into a habit students do outside the classroom. One idea is to get students to annotate their readings regularly. Many free mobile apps and web tools allow students to digitally markup, highlight, and jot down quick thoughts about what they are reading.
