There’s no question that a “piggy” bank is a wonderful gift for a new baby. It’s a great decor piece, can become a sentimental heirloom and it’s useful in the meantime. If you’re looking for the perfect bank to give as a gift, take a look at the ceramic animal banks from Kooroo . These limited edition pieces are crafted in the US and are little works of art. Prices range from $34 to $50 In addition to the Lion and Elephants, they have Rhinos, Buffalo and Camels. http://buymodernbaby.com/blog/

The best modern nurseries, products, gear and gifts

When you're a teenager (and maybe a budding decorator), nothing's more thrilling than being able to express your style in the one space that is truly yours — your bedroom. I remember my room as being an enthusiastic, if not entirely coherent, mishmash of styles, but Caitlin Ballantyne, who is just 14, already has a bedroom that's magazine-worthy.

It’s hard to believe that my very hands-on, very competent husband-the same person who is taking our four year old on a daddy/daughter ski trip to Deer Valley-is also the same person who asked me if it was okay that Rafi was drinking salad dressing straight out of the container ( What?! No it’s not . ) And the same person, as I’ve written before, who gave our children Pinkberry toppings for breakfast one morning. The latest is his giving Rafi our travel blankets to use in her crib. That’s right, the ones we use on the plane. “But she loves it.”

http://littlelovely.typepad.com/ Every child has one of those books . The ones they never tire of, insist being read over and over and over again. For us, it used to be Where The Wild Things Are. Now it's Parrot Carrot . I received a copy several weeks ago from the illustrator, Jon Foye and showed it to Hunter.

little. lovely. Lovely ideas for little people.

Li'l Magoolie

Chantal Vincent posted this image of Sydney café Sotto on West and has kindly allowed me to publish it. It got me wondering how it would be possible to make it yourself. Here are some of the teacup light tutorials I discovered through the trusty Googleator. http://www.lilmagoolie.com/

Junior Society

One of my current jobs includes coordinating the workshops program for my neighborhood Paper Source store in Santa Monica and this past week I had a great time teaching a ‘carve your own rubber stamp’ class. Carving your own stamp is a surprisingly simple craft and one with a lot of potential applications. (I’m teaching an encore class on Saturday, April 16th - if you’re interested in attending, call the Santa Monica Paper Source store at (310) 255-7988. I’d love to see you there!) With Spring officially on our doorstep, I thought it would be fun to create stamps for egg decorating and experiment with ’stamp embossing.’ In short stamp embossing involves stamping ink onto a surface (usually paper), applying embossing powder to the wet ink and then melting the embossing powder with a heat tool - creating a surface effect similar to that of engraving or thermography with a raised and glossy design. http://www.juniorsociety.com/

House of Jelly

http://www.houseofjelly.com/ spring is in the air. yes, believe it or not it is around the corner. in honor of putting away those now trashed winter boots and heavy coats, here is a small, small taste (more to come) of spring outfits for your little girl. i'm giving you permission to pair that special item in her closet with something basic. not everything has to be so precious, soon enough it won't fit and it will find itself in your give away pile. i love the jacquard jacket with a tee, sweatpants and a yellow shoe, which will work with the most basic of outfits to the most colorful. graphic adult like prints with sophisticated colors can work for kids as well. paired again with a yellow shoe and the outfit looks less serious, or try it with a graphic tee or even a hooded sweatshirt.
UpSwing by Kevin Shay is a compact & portable swing that can quickly be set up anywhere, encouraging you to explore your surroundings and turn them into a giant playground. I love this simple yet totally ingenious DIY project–a rolling book cubby for kids made using a set of trucks & wheels from an old skateboard. Get the full details at Project Little Smith .

This week’s blog pick comes from Designing Mom Carina of Nonchalant Mom who documented her trip to the NYC Playtime Children’s Trade Show. To see her trip in full click here. It’s been a busy week of running around locating props and frocks. Below is a pick of some of the shoes I amassed. Tomorrow I am out of the studio shooting a little video for the Mom, Inc Book and I can’t wait to share it with all of you!
