A new computer program could help to calm civil unrest and identify early threats to public safety by analysing postings on Twitter and assessing public mood, academics have said. The system can analyse up to 2,000 tweets a second to extract from each a direct expression of one of eight basic emotions: anger, disgust, fear, happiness, sadness, surprise, shame and confusion.

The team who developed the program at Loughborough University's new centre for information management said it could be possible to use the complex software, named Emotive, to geographically map the emotional mood of the nation and its reaction to big events. The medical conversations are happening on Twitter, not Facebook, and that’s a good thing. When twitter initially launched I was largely skeptical on how it could be utilized in medicine. Initially I thought Facebook was a better option due to the ability to use more than 140 characters. Overtime though, it has become clear the medical conversations are happening on Twitter, not Facebook. An example of this is when we highlighted the #FOAMed movement — Free Open Access to Medicine Education. We highlighted how Physicians around the country are using twitter and social media to teach and learn in a dynamic way. In particular, we referenced 11 critical FOAMed resources for Emergency Medicine. Nowhere was Facebook mentioned. I think that’s a good thing. Social Media Users Say Pinterest Is as Popular as Twitter. While Facebook reigns supreme in the social media landscape, the latest study by Pew shows users are pinning just as much as they're tweeting. Twitter attracted 16% of social media users, followed by 15% on Pinterest in 2012. Everyone's favorite pastime is still Facebook, though, raking in a majority of respondents' votes.

Tumblr comes in as the least popular with only 6% of people on the site. The report details who exactly is using these networks, explaining that sites like Instagram appeal more to women, Latinos and African-Americans. Is the Younger Generation Using Twitter? In 2010 I was lecturing at the International College of Management to a class of 18 to 24 year old students.

Fast forward 18 months and a different class but with the same demographics, I asked the same question, instead of one hand I saw five. Not How Twitter Can Change Health CareHealth 2. Biz Stone started his HIMSS12 keynote by telling the audience that he was going to talk about a few personal stories and a few assumptions. Before anyone could silently groan at the thought of the co-founder of Twitter rattling off his assumptions about the health care industry, Stone quickly added that he wouldn’t do that.

“I didn’t actually want to get into the business of telling you what your business is,” he said. Instead he stuck to what he knows and shared insights spanning from technology to art to community. Stone’s anecdotes describing how he started Twitter translated well to a health care conference because Twitter is fundamentally an altruistic service. This isn’t obvious on the surface. Similarly, a lot of the products and services at HIMSS don’t have altruistic aims, but they’re made to improve health care — also a fundamentally altruistic service. Stone explained that he first started believing in Twitter’s potential when he saw it mobilize people right in front of him.
