In a groundbreaking new study that’s sure to send health-conscious guys running to the produce market, tomatoes now are linked to lower stroke risk in men. Researchers examining the blood levels of more than 1,000 Finnish men ages 46 to 65, found that those whose blood contained the highest levels of lycopene had 55 percent less chance of suffering a stroke. Those results, published in the October 8 issue of the journal Neurology, held true even after adjusting for the men’s age, health and other risk factors such as smoking and obesity.

Because stroke is the third leading cause of death in this country, the fact that simply adding more tomatoes to your diet can add years to their life is big news for men in their middle years. Effects of lycopene on women’s stroke risk was not studied. Tomatoes and tomato-based products are particularly recommended because they, “contain more lycopene than other fruits and vegetables,” according to Dr. Karppi. Why Lycopene? A new Harvard study has discovered a high incidence of vision problems among men and women who drank three or more cups of coffee a day. The research, published in Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science, linked heavy consumption of caffeinated coffee with increased likelihood of developing exfoliation glaucoma, an eye disorder that affects about 10 percent of adults over age 50 and can lead to vision loss or blindness.

Specifically, the researchers reported that adults who drank three or more cups of coffee daily were 34 percent more likely to develop exfoliation glaucoma, compared to those who abstained from coffee. Women with a family history of glaucoma were at the highest risk, with their threat of exfoliation glaucoma soaring by 66 percent if they quaffed three or more cups of java per day.

20 Ways to Add Years to Your Life. 10 Surprising Dangers of Vitamins and Supplements. More than half of American adults take vitamins, minerals, herbs, or other nutritional supplements. Some of those products aren’t especially helpful, readers told us in a recent survey, but that aside, don’t assume they’re safe because they’re “all natural.” They may be neither. Here are 10 hazards that we’ve distilled from interviews with experts, published research, and our own analysis of reports of serious adverse events submitted to the Food and Drug Administration, which we obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Read and be warned. 1. Supplements are not risk-free More than 6,300 reports of serious adverse events associated with dietary supplements, including vitamins and herbs, streamed into the FDA from supplement companies, consumers, health-care providers, and others between 2007 and mid-April of 2012. The FDA gets far more reports about serious problems with prescription medication than about supplements.

You may have read recently that New York City residents are outliving the rest of America. According to researchers at the University of Washington, the life expectancy of the average New York City resident is 80.6 years—three years above the national average.

What’s more, a New Yorker’s average life expectancy grew a staggering 13.6 years between 1989 and 2009. The researchers credit the extra years to the New York Health Department’s commitment to curbing the Big Apple’s worst habits: They’ve banned trans fats, added calorie counts to menus, and encouraged physical activity with more bike lanes and walking paths. But, trust me, New Yorkers haven’t cornered the market on healthy living.

Skip the Soup, Order the Salad Italian researchers found that eating as little as 1 cup of raw vegetables daily can add 2 years to your life. Because they were a fancy new kind—bifocals; who knew? —they were pretty expensive. My insurance, he explained, would pay for only one six-month supply per year. I’d have to pay for the rest myself, around $200. “I’ll just take six months’ worth then,” I told him. He looked at me inquisitively.

Last week, I called to reorder. These contacts are designed to last for two weeks, so my doctor would surely scold me for wearing each pair for four or five. When it comes to staying healthy, much of what we accept as gospel is actually heresy. This advice originally came from an old toothpaste ad. Just don’t wait longer than that: A study presented at the American Heart Association meeting last year found that having your teeth cleaned by a professional once a year lowers your risk of heart attack by 24 percent and stroke by 13 percent.

10 Foods That Prevent Cancer. Numerous studies over the years (more than 30 different studies to date) have documented the anti-cancer properties of garlic. The strongest evidence so far has focused on digestive cancers, but garlic appears to protect against all types of cancer, including breast and prostate. According to the National Cancer Institute, an analysis of seven different large-scale population studies showed that the more raw and cooked garlic a person consumed, the lower his risk of stomach and colorectal cancer; one study found that middle-aged women who regularly consumed garlic had a 50 percent lower risk of developing colon cancer. Scientists have isolated two active ingredients in garlic, allicin and allyl sulfur, and demonstrated that they prevent and fight cancer in both animals and humans; you can take garlic in supplement form but the capsules must be enteric-coated to protect these active ingredients. 7 Surprising Reasons You Wake Up Tired.
