Hokusai great wave. Bestor Architecture. In the LA neighborhood of Echo Park, Bestor Architecture is bringing a new type of community-friendly, pedestrian-friendly development to the United States. The Blackbirds project is described by Barbara Bestor as introducing “stealth density” to the Echo Park neighborhood, imitating the size and roofline of the surrounding houses but incorporating multiple homes under one roof.

The design looks to the Dutch concept of the ‘Woonerf’, or living street, to propose a space which favors pedestrians and cyclists over cars, and features landscape design by Mia Lehrer + Associates, creating a communal space around which a ‘micro-community’ can thrive. Architect: Dan Brunn Location: San Francisco, CA, USA Client: Arik Tendler, CaesarStone USA Contractor: Sigura Construction Project Area: 4,000 sq ft Budget: $500,000 Project Year: 2007 Photographs: Dan Brunn Working with an existing warehouse shell, one of the key design objectives was the integration of the old with the new; creating a synergistic juxtaposition between the raw existing space and the new pristine space.

To accomplish this, a careful orchestration of elements is placed within the confines of the existing shell. These new elements enhance and work with the existing conditions. The new elements ultimately respect and enhance the otherwise banal shell. The existing shell was sandblasted to reveal the warmth of the wood trusses underneath the layers of paint and dirt.

In plan, the space is divided into two parts along its longitudinally: public and private. Beginning at the entry space, a custom receptionist desk is easily recognizable to new customers. Project description This weekend retreat is projected on a land of little over 1,000 square meters and it is articulated in two main volumes: a prism into which another rectangular wooden prism is embedded.Since the very beginning, the purpose of this project was clear: to create a house in which a balance between modernity and coziness was struck. Therefore, we chose to use few materials in order to achieve a quick reading of the volumes. The first prism consists of a black metal structure that ends on an exposed concrete staple.

The two fronts of this volume are made of glass, which helps create a transparency to the interior area and gives a feeling of permanently being in touch with nature. The second volume is a cantilevered wooden cube, under which a terrace is generated. Space is a conundrum that often resurfaces when designing a house and this problem is all the more exaggerated in an urban setting. With modern studio apartments and urban residences trying to make use of every available square inch in a smart fashion, innovative architecture is indeed the order of the day. Kariouk Associates have created one such smart and savvy modern residence in Ottawa, Ontario where the shower and storage areas have been designed in the form of elliptical enclosures that double up as chic room dividers. The design of the Redeveloper Apartment is indeed both inventive and ergonomic to the core as it does away with the traditional notion of well-defined spaces that are bifurcated using large walls.

With this particular apartment not having enough space to incorporate different segregated public and private quarters, the architects decided to opt for modern additions that save on space. Contemporary London House For a Working Mom & a Man United Fan. It is not very difficult to plan and design a home for a single mom and her teenage son. But it is indeed a challenge to revamp an existing structure in the heart of an industrial hub into a home for a working mom and her son who is a Manchester United fanatic. (that is a soccer club, in case those across the Atlantic are wondering) That was precisely the task handed to interior designer Tim Newsome and he has indeed created a wonderful modern home that is both space-conscious and brings in every design element that the new owners desired.

The designer stated with the kitchen and while the entire kitchen seems to carry the patented and now, very familiar, all-white look, a certain section has been marked out in a unique shade of blue. The blue was picked out to match the shade of the teenager’s eyes (or something close to that, it seems). Www.decoist.com: loft. Philippe Starck. Philippe Starck is a French designer[1] who has become widely known since the start of his career in the 1980s[2] for his interior, product, industrial and architectural design work. Career[edit] The son of an aeronautical engineer, Starck studied at the École Camondo in Paris. An inflatable structure he imagined in 1969 was a first incursion into questions of materiality, and an early indicator of Starck's interest in where and how people live.

Starck's iconoclastic designs brought him to the attention of Pierre Cardin who offered him a job as artistic director of his publishing house. A year later he designed the Asahi Beer Hall in Tokyo, a building topped with a golden spermatozoon. Alhondiga, Bilbao, 2010 For the past thirty years Philippe Starck has been designing hotels all over the world, including the Royalton in New York in 1988, the Delano in Miami in 1995, the Mondrian in Los Angeles, the St Martin's Lane in London in 1999, and the Sanderson, also in London, in 2000. She won the 1967 Golden Globe Award for Best Actress - Motion Picture Drama and the Award for Best Actress at the 1980 Cannes Film Festival. In 2002 she received an honorary César Award, France's national film award. Early years[edit] Aimée was born Françoise Sorya Dreyfus in Paris, France, the daughter of actor Henri Murray (born Henry Dreyfus)[2] and actress Geneviève Sorya (née Durand).

Ai Weiwei (Chinese: 艾未未; pinyin: Ài Wèiwèi; English pronunciation ), born 18 May 1957 in Beijing, is a Chinese contemporary artist, active in sculpture, installation, architecture, curating, photography, film, and social, political and cultural criticism.[1][2] Ai collaborated with Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron as the artistic consultant on the Beijing National Stadium for the 2008 Olympics.[3] As a political activist, he has been highly and openly critical of the Chinese Government's stance on democracy and human rights.

He has investigated government corruption and cover-ups, in particular the Sichuan schools corruption scandal following the collapse of so-called "tofu-dreg schools" in the 2008 Sichuan earthquake.[4] In 2011, following his arrest at Beijing Capital International Airport on 3 April, he was held for 81 days without any official charges being filed; officials alluded to their allegations of "economic crimes".[5] Life and work[edit] Early life and work[edit] 2007[edit] Flapper. A flapper onboard ship (1929) Flappers were a "new breed" of young Western women in the 1920s who wore short skirts, bobbed their hair, listened to jazz, and flaunted their disdain for what was then considered acceptable behavior. Flappers were seen as brash for wearing excessive makeup, drinking, treating sex in a casual manner, smoking, driving automobiles, and otherwise flouting social and sexual norms.[1] Flappers had their origins in the liberal period of the Roaring Twenties, the social, political turbulence and increased transatlantic cultural exchange that followed the end of World War I, as well as the export of American jazz culture to Europe.

Etymology[edit] The slang word flapper, describing a young woman, is sometimes supposed to refer to a young bird flapping its wings while learning to fly. By 1920, the term had taken on the full meaning of the flapper generation style and attitudes. Evolution of the image[edit] Writers in the United States such as F. Behavior[edit] Louise Brooks. Louise Brooks (November 14, 1906 – August 8, 1985), born Mary Louise Brooks, was an American dancer and actress, noted for popularizing the bobbed haircut. Early life[edit] Born in Cherryvale, Kansas, Louise Brooks was the daughter of Leonard Porter Brooks, a lawyer, who was usually too busy with his practice to discipline his children, and Myra Rude, an artistic mother who determined that any "squalling brats she produced could take care of themselves".[1]:11 Brooks in high school, 1922 Rude was a talented pianist who played the latest Debussy and Ravel for her children, inspiring them with a love of books and music.

When she was nine years old, a neighborhood predator sexually abused Louise. Brooks began her entertainment career as a dancer, joining the Denishawn modern dance company in Los Angeles (whose members included founders Ruth St. Denis, and Ted Shawn, as well as a young Martha Graham) in 1922. Career[edit] American films[edit] In Europe[edit] Life after film[edit] Rediscovery[edit] Clara Bow. After marrying actor Rex Bell in 1931, Bow retired from acting and became a rancher in Nevada. Her final film, Hoop-La, was released in 1933. In September 1965, Bow died of a heart attack at the age of 60. Early life[edit] Bow was born in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, New York at 697 Bergen Street.[7] Her birth year, according to US Census 1910 and 1920 was given as 1905.[8] In the Census of 1930 Bow claims she was born in 1906.[9] and on her gravestone of 1965 the inscription says 1907.

Bow was her parents' third child; her two older sisters, born in 1903 and 1904 respectively, died in infancy.[10] Her mother, Sarah Bow (née Gordon, 1880–1923), was told by a doctor not to become pregnant again for fear the next baby might die as well. At sixteen, Clara's mother Sarah fell from a second-story window and suffered a severe head injury. From her earliest years, Bow learned how to care for her mother during the seizures as well as how to deal with the psychotic and hostile episodes. Bow in 1921. Metropolis. Tokyo, the world's largest metropolis A metropolis is a large city or urban area which is a significant economic, political, and cultural center for a country or region, and an important hub for regional or international connections, commerce, and communications.

The term is Greek and means the "mother city" of a colony (in the ancient sense), that is, the city which sent out settlers. This was later generalized to a city regarded as a center of a specified activity, or any large, important city in a nation. Urban areas of fewer than one million people are rarely considered metropolises in contemporary contexts. [citation needed] Big cities belonging to a larger urban agglomeration, but which are not the core of that agglomeration, are not generally considered a metropolis but a part of it. The plural of the word is most commonly metropolises.[1] Antiquity[edit] In the past, metropolis was the designation for a city or state of origin of a colony. Etymology and modern usage[edit] India[edit] Art Nouveau. Art Nouveau is considered a "total" art style, embracing architecture, graphic art, interior design, and most of the decorative arts including jewellery, furniture, textiles, household silver and other utensils and lighting, as well as the fine arts.

According to the philosophy of the style, art should be a way of life. For many well-off Europeans, it was possible to live in an art nouveau-inspired house with art nouveau furniture, silverware, fabrics, ceramics including tableware, jewellery, cigarette cases, etc. Artists desired to combine the fine arts and applied arts, even for utilitarian objects.[3] Origins[edit] Art Nouveau interior at the 1900 Paris Universal Exhibition by Bruno Möhring, German pavilion.

Naming[edit] Jugendstil sculpture, detail of facade in Metz, France Art Nouveau is usually known as Jugendstil (pronounced [ˈjuːɡən̩tʃtiːl ]) in Germany, as Modern (Модерн) in Russia, as Modernisme in Catalonia (Spain), as Secession in Austria-Hungary and as Stile Liberty in Italy.
