Until a few years ago, even the existence of the agreement was not acknowledged by the two governments. EU Demand Tougher UK Rules over Phorm and Internet Data Protection ... The European Commission (EC) has issued a "reasoned opinion" calling on the UK to strengthen the powers of its Data Protection Authority so that it complies with the EU's 1995 Data Protection Directive (95/46/EC).
The move is related to the previous government’s inability to clamp down on Phorm , which controversially worked with broadband ISPs to monitor what websites you visit for use in targeted advertising campaigns. Several key issues remain unresolved, notably limitations of the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) powers:• It cannot monitor whether third countries' data protection is adequate. These assessments should come before international transfers of personal information;• It can neither perform random checks on people using or processing personal data, nor enforce penalties following the checks. Two million more Britons come online in last 12 months. 30 June 2010Last updated at 00:02 Sites such as Saga's portal are popular with older net audiences Nearly two million more Britons have come online during the last year, over half of which are over 50, according to new research.
The UK Online Measurement Company (UKOM) found that the net audience now stands at 38.8 million, up from 36.9 million at the same time last year. The majority of internet newbies were made up of over-50s, with more men than women joining up.
