Neurologists Discover Michelangelo's Paintings Of God With A Brain. Michelangelo was a religious man, but he was also a scientist. He must have been very conflicted about painting a brain and brainstem in God's head and neck, especially in the Sistine Chapel. After all, he was commissioned by the Church, which did not take too kindly to literal images on its murals. But, paint the brain he did, even if it was just an outline of the brain in the section of the Sistine Chapel depiction of the Creation of Adam.

Michaelangelo's painting of the Creation of Adam in the Sistine Chapel: First identified by Meshberger in 1990. Recently, two Johns Hopkins University neurologists did further study of Sistine Chapel frescoes and found more anatomical depictions in the fourth panel of the series The Separation of Light From Darkness. The fourth panel, showing God in the 'Separation of Light From Darkness' depicts a ventrel view of the brainstem: images by authors Ian Suk and Rafael Tamargo, via Neurosurgery The authors provide plenty of evidence for their theories. Why I'm returning my new iPad and buying a Kindle Fire | iPad Atlas. My new iPad is going back to the store. I paid $600 for the 32GB Wi-Fi model, and although I like it well enough, I don't think it's worth the money. Before the Apple faithful take my head off, allow me to explain -- and to note that I'm keeping my original iPad. Also, I have such mad love for my iPhone 4S, I want to cook it breakfast every morning.

You get my meaning; this isn't just wayward iPad-bashing. When Apple announced the new tablet, I was underwhelmed but intrigued. Mostly, though, I got caught up in the hype. The fuss, it turns out, was more overblown than a Kardashian wedding. The new iPad is admirably peppy, though I never found my original iPad to be slow. The 4G LTE? As fate would have it, a Kindle Fire arrived shortly after the new iPad. Yes, it has a smaller screen, less storage, no cameras, no 3G/4G, no Bluetooth, and so on. For one thing, it's way more comfortable for reading. I also like magazines, most notably Entertainment Weekly, Time, and Wired. Your thoughts? Chrome Multitask Mode. A new way to multitask. On December 9, 1968, Douglas Engelbart rocked the computing world with The Mother of All Demos. One of the many advancements Engelbart discussed was the creation of a simple, intuitive pointing device that would allow you to manipulate a cursor on a screen with the movement of your hand.

The world met the mouse. Before the mouse, the primary way to interact with a computer was to type a command, wait for a response, and type a second command. The ability to coordinate between the movement of a marker on the screen and a flick of the wrist was truly revolutionary, and has transformed the way we interface with our machines today. However, for decades, the full power of the mouse has been limited. On the Chrome team, we’ve been working to address this problem. Multitask Mode lets you have access to multiple mice at the same time, so you can make a chess move while you watch a dance move, or draw a horse while you draw on a friend for relationship advice. Thunder Horse & Blue Marlin. Person or Object? The Case of Homelessness. An ad agency in New York has recently planned to pay homeless people $20 a day to act as travelling Wi-Fi Internet hot spots. The homeless people would wear t-shirts as part of the position, stating that they are a Wi-Fi hotspot.

This pretty directly insinuates that these people were, to an extent at least, being dehumanized. This would not surprise researchers Lasana Harris (now at Duke University) and Susan Fiske (at Princeton University) who tested how people perceive members of other groups at a basic neural level. Basically, this area of the brain called the Medial Prefrontal Cortex (mPFC) activates when people do things that involve perceiving and relating to other people, such as recognizing and distinguishing between faces and empathizing. These researchers hypothesized, however, that like objects such as tables, images of certain groups of people—the homeless—would fail to activate the mPFC. This is exactly what they found. So why is this? 1987 - American heart association - Larry Bird. I am very real. In October of 1973, Bruce Severy — a 26-year-old English teacher at Drake High School, North Dakota — decided to use Kurt Vonnegut's novel, Slaughterhouse-Five, as a teaching aid in his classroom.

The next month, on November 7th, the head of the school board, Charles McCarthy, demanded that all 32 copies be burned in the school's furnace as a result of its "obscene language. " Other books soon met with the same fate. On the 16th of November, Kurt Vonnegut sent McCarthy the following letter. He didn't receive a reply. It’s hard to believe that someone envisioned tablet PCs 18 years ago, but a dusty video clip from 1994 shows us that there were, in fact, technology visionaries before Steve Jobs (insert “ironic grin” here). The video shows how newspaper company Knight Ridder saw the news of the future and, darn it, I must say that those guys were spot on with their assumptions. However, what they probably didn’t think their little video would do is seriously hurt Apple’s chances of winning the design patent war against Samsung and other Android tablet manufacturers, a war that is heading towards a conclusion these days.

How did something like this happen? Well, it’s pretty simple. Apple has been accusing Samsung numerous times over the past year or so of ripping off the iPad’s design with its Galaxy Tab slates. The design in question is a rectangle with rounded corners and a big glass screen, which, for anyone with some sense, doesn’t sound like an awfully original concept. With Google’s long awaited file-synchronisation service Google Drive set to launch within the coming weeks, details are already starting to emerge over what it will provide for users. A leaked screenshot of the service has indicated that when Google does take the wraps off its Drive service, users will automatically be furnished with 5GB of free storage, rivalling offerings by Box.net and SugarSync, and eclipsing the default 2GB storage limit of Dropbox’s increasingly popular service (the company allows you to add more space via social sharing initiatives etc).

Dropbox employs the tagline: “Your life’s work, wherever you are.” Google’s: “All your files – everywhere.” The search giant notes that users will be able to “Put files in Google Drive and you can access them on your desktop, mobile phone or tablet, and drive.google.com.” Google has already started updating pages on its Support portal, referencing the document-editing capabilities of the Google Drive Android application: Understanding aside. Please note aside has been redefined since this post was written, please read the updated article. HTML 5 offers a new element to mark additional information that can enhance an article but isn’t necessarily key to understanding it. However, in the interpretation of <aside> there lies confusion as to how it can be used, and with that there is demand for the Doctor to step up and clear the air. In this article I will look at what <aside> was created for, including sample uses and how not to use this useful, misunderstood element. First, a look at how the HTML 5 specification defines <aside>: The aside element represents a section of a page that consists of content that is tangentially related to the content around the aside element, and which could be considered separate from that content.

Such sections are often represented as sidebars in printed typography. What can often trip-up someone reading the specification is the use of the word “sidebar”. How strict should this relationship be? Chrome Releases. Best Buy says it will close 50 big box stores, cut 400 jobs. Faced with a stubborn slide in sales at its U.S. stores, Best Buy Co. Inc. announced Thursday its steepest round of cuts: closure of 50 big box stores and elimination of 400 positions at corporate headquarters in Richfield. The closings include five stores in the Twin Cities area, leaving 301 workers without jobs. Nationally, layoffs will likely be in the thousands since each store employs roughly 100 workers, including so-called Blue Shirts and Geek Squad technicians. Best Buy, once known as the undisputed discount king of consumer electronics, has been struggling to find its place in a world dominated by flashy high-end brand temples like Apple Stores and low-cost Internet retailers like Amazon.

Customers have been increasingly migrating online, where they often find better deals, forcing Best Buy to figure out a reason why shoppers would need to visit an actual store. Cloud storage powerhouse Dropbox has redesigned its website and main interface with welcome new features including an all-powerful “action bar”, a Lightbox photo viewer, better search, and more, the company announced Thursday evening. Dropbox engineer Trevor Berg writes: One of our main goals was to slim down dropbox.com and focus on the star of the page: your stuff. We’ve put all the tools you need at your fingertips, but only when you need them. The new action bar at the top of the screen does it all. Think of it as a multi-tool that adjusts to your needs. You can use it to sort your files by name, date, size, and type. Another important addition to its revamped interface is a Lightbox photo viewer that allows you to see your photos and videos in full screen.

Other great features that Dropbox has added include the ability to drag-and-drop files, improved multiple-file selection, and faster search. Check out more screenshots of the new Dropbox redesign below: Google’s Drive cloud storage offering “might” finally arrive next week. Google’s long-awaited Drive cloud storage service might finally arrive during the first week of April, according to a thinly sourced GigaOM report. In early February, we heard that Google would soon launch a cloud storage service similar to Dropbox, Box, Microsoft’s SkyDrive, and Amazon CloudDrive. Drive’s offerings will most closely resemble Dropbox, which gives users access to cloud-connected storage on smartphones, tablets, Macs, and PCs. A Google spokesperson gave us the usual statement in regards to the report: “We do not comment on rumors or speculation.” Even with the GigaOM story on hand, the timing of the release could be off slightly.

Founder and senior writer Om Malik felt the need to bold the word “might” twice in his piece to shield himself from his “well placed” anonymous sources being wrong. A screenshot of Drive leaked out in mid-February and not surprisingly, the service looks almost exactly the same as Google Docs. Google Drive spotted in the wild, still looks exactly like Google Docs. Google’s long-rumored cloud storage solution, Drive, has been spotted on one user’s account. Not surprisingly, it looks about the same as Google Docs and a handful of the company’s other online services.

A reader forwarded the above screenshot to Geekwire, which also managed to dig up Google’s planned logo for the service (see right). Google refused to comment on the news, which is par for the course when it comes to rumors. We heard last week that Google was close to launching Drive, so we’ll likely see the service popping up on more accounts soon.

The screenshot above has an option to “Install Google Drive,” which is likely a way to integrate the service alongside your typical desktop folders. With Google Drive, the search company will be going head-to-head with other cloud storage services like Dropbox and Microsoft SkyDrive. Dev Channel Update. The year Obama took office, older Americans made almost forty-seven times as much as the younger generation.
