Erik Verlinde

He is the identical twin brother of physicist Herman Verlinde. The Verlinde formula, which is important in conformal field theory and topological field theory, is named after him. His research deals with string theory, gravity, black holes and cosmology. Currently he works at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the University of Amsterdam. At a symposium at the Dutch Spinoza-institute on 8 December 2009 he introduced a theory of entropic gravity. References[edit] External links[edit]

Power Shift - Learn. Meet Jessica, a real power player: she invented a soccer ball that generates electricity when you kick it. Play a quick game of soccer with your friends, and you can power your household light for an entire evening. Jessica tested her idea in South Africa and Kenya. Now she has her own company called sOccket to help her spread her big idea all over the world. And she's not the only young social innovator changing where and how we can get power. Meet Hugo, born and raised in South Africa. Your LEARN mission this week is to figure out: Who else is inventing creative, sustainable ways to power our everyday lives? Try searching "social entrepreneur" and "electricity", OR "social innovation" and "energy", OR "sustainable energy" and "creative solution". The Myth of Gravity. Meet Erik Verlinde , dutch theoretical physicist ( String Theory ) at the University of Amsterdam.

The Myth of Gravity

He recently introduced a deep new way of looking at gravity , in which gravity is no longer seen as a fundamental force but as a emergent phenomenon. The way his reconceptualizations will lead to you inventing creative and sustainable ways to power our everyday lives lay still deeply hidden in our future. And by means of spreading his concepts i hope to contribute to this end. Below you will find my youtube playlist of his Marie Curie colloquium lecture of 30 march 2010. mobile: youtube playlist via. Pearltrees intro & help videos. Induced gravity. Induced gravity (or emergent gravity) is an idea in quantum gravity that space-time background emerges as a mean field approximation of underlying microscopic degrees of freedom, similar to the fluid mechanics approximation of Bose–Einstein condensates.

Induced gravity

The concept was originally proposed by Andrei Sakharov in 1967. Sakharov observed that many condensed matter systems give rise to emergent phenomena which are identical to general relativity. For example, crystal defects can look like curvature and torsion in an Einstein–Cartan spacetime. This allows one to create a theory of gravity with torsion from a World Crystal model of spacetime[1] in which the lattice spacing is of the order of a Planck length.

Sakharov's idea was to start with an arbitrary background pseudo-Riemannian manifold (in modern treatments, possibly with torsion) and introduce quantum fields (matter) on it but not introduce any gravitational dynamics explicitly. Some argue[who?] See also[edit]
