Well, a company known as VEA Buddy must have taken cue from rumors of an iWatch to launch a pre-emptive strike, if you could call it that, with what they tout as the “most advanced wristwatch ever designed.” Is that so? I do doubt the authenticity of such a claim, as it mentions wristwatch and not smartwatch, and surely those super precise timepieces from the Swiss masters are a whole lot more advanced? The VEA Buddy Bluetooth watch is yet another device that joins the slew of smartwatches that are being released into the market lately. On Indiegogo, the Marseille, France-based team behind the watch are asking for funding to help support the development of the device. The VEA Buddy Bluetooth watch provides a secondary screen which comes with plenty of features. For one, it gives the wearer an alert for an incoming call, and displays either the name or the number of the caller. Information on missed calls and received calls may also be shown. A notification is likewise displayed when the smartphone gets a new text, MMS, or e-mail message. Facebook and Twitter notifications are also shown on the VEA Buddy, as well. Alerts are given when a calendar event nears to allow the wearer time to prepare. Even photos from the gallery on one’s smartphone can be displayed on the smartwatch screen. Pebble competitor VEA Buddy's Bluetooth Watch may be Indiegogo's first breakout campaign in France. Just last December, Indiegogo announced its international launch, adding euros and pound sterling to the currencies that it would accept, and while it didn’t seems like a big change, it only took a few months for the first breakout French hardware project to pop up. The Marseille-based VEA Buddy bluetooth watch has already garnered $78K of its $320K with over a month to go in its campaign, and it’s quite easy to see how having an international platform behind them garners attention: the comments and funders are coming from all over the US, France & beyond. The ability for a non-US campaign to get this level of funding has only been made possible with recent barrier-reductions like Indiegogo’s recent partnership with Adyen which allows them to accept local payment currencies. While local competitors across Europe are banding together to reach critical mass, they may be missing out on the key metric – audience – which Indiegogo comes preloaded with in Europe.
Indiegogo vs. Meet Buddy, Another Ambitious, Crowdfunded Smart Watch. Haven’t we all suffered enough abuse at the hands of Big Smart Watch? No? Well now there’s Buddy, a Bluetooth smartwatch that aims to solve the problems associated with all those other watches. Buddy is focused on social networking and notifications so it will ping you when your Facebook or Twitter feed is updated as well as send the standard call/text/calendar notifications you expect from a smart watch. The ambitious watch is the product of Vea Digital, a smartwatch company best known for their Sportive work-out watch. The company’s new project, however, is wildly ambitious. It has a capacitive color touchscreen, works with iOS and Android, and contains 8GB of memory in a package 8mm thick. It’s a huge watch, to be sure, and the renders/prototype models show a unique and colorful icon-based UI that might work better than the cramped black and white design of other devices.
