A Visual Analysis of How People Shop in IKEA. "When you're inside an Ikea store, you must come to terms with a near permanent state of bewilderment: shelves stacked with flat brown boxes labelled with random codes and names; a yellow road which takes you inexplicably through bedrooms when all you wanted was some kitchen handles. " (Susie Steiner, The Guardian, 2005). Normally architects organize space to make the experience as efficient as possible. At IKEA though, however, the (almost 'urban') designers deliberately set out to confuse people, drawing them into buying things that are not on their shopping list.

If you like to watch this phenomenon being scientifically analyzed in extreme detail, meanwhile enjoying the view of various (heat)maps, graphs, 3D reconstructions and other illustrations, then be sure to watch the recording of a talk (the IKEA case in particular starts around the 24:30 mark), by Alan Penn, Professor of Architectural and Urban Computing at The Bartlett School of Graduate Studies, University College London. Consumer Perceptions Toward Store Brands Still Strong – But National Brands Gaining Ground. Home / News & Polls / New York, NY - While the majority of global consumers still perceive store brands to be the same as or better than national brands, a one year trend analysis indicates that their positive perceptions toward store brands may be starting to decline slightly. This is the latest finding from a study conducted by Ipsos Marketing, Consumer Goods.

Consumers from around the world were asked to compare store brands to national brands on a host of attributes. On key dimensions, including providing good value for the money, meeting their needs, offering convenience, being good for their families, and offering products their family requests, over 80% of global consumers indicated that store brands are the same as or better than national brands. However, compared to the same study conducted a year prior, store brand ratings declined somewhat, most notably in the areas of being environmentally-friendly, high-quality, trustworthy, unique and innovative. [Infographic] Shopping site, Milo, has created a useful infographic that details how consumers are spending their money month-by-month over the course of one year.

Overall, consumers spent more in 2010 compared to the previous year. This isn’t surprising as consumer confidence slowly bounced back after being affected by the global financial crisis in 2008. What is interesting is that the most ‘lavish’ month for consumers is in March, whereas the most ‘frugal’ month is in January. December is an all-rounder favorable month when it comes to consumer spending in retail, health and personal care, food and beverage and also electronics. Milo: A Year in the Wallet.
