CeraMetal: Combining Metal Powders and Ceramics. Recent graduate with an Industrial Design degree from H.I.T, Einat Kirschner conducted a project during her studies, called CeraMetal, that examined various techniques of combining metal powders and ceramics.
Both materials have similar processing methods and heating temperatures, so pairing them up was ideal. The first method (above left) uses magnets to shape iron powder creating unique forms that look like they were taken from underwater. The protruding design seems like it would be fragile to the touch but it’s actually strong, thanks to the ceramic material. Bees can detect cancer in minutes. Portuguese designer Susana Soares has developed a device for detecting cancer and other serious diseases using trained bees.
The bees are placed in a glass chamber into which the patient exhales; the bees fly into a smaller secondary chamber if they detect cancer. Scientists have found that honey bees – Apis mellifera – have an extraordinary sense of smell that is more acute than that of a sniffer dog and can detect airborne molecules in the parts-per-trillion range. Bees can be trained to detect specific chemical odours, including the biomarkers associated with diseases such as tuberculosis, lung, skin and pancreatic cancer. (Link) Online grocery and contextual commerce. I think it is important to continuously explore the new visions and concepts for food retailing that business leaders are championing in the real world.
One of those leaders is Chad Arnold, CEO of Door to Door Organics, and this week we talk to him and Kristen Lindquist, VP of Product Development, about their philosophy and approach. The team at Door to Door Organics (DTDO) has developed a "contextual commerce platform" that uses technology to build the online shopping experience around meals and people's relationship with food instead of separate unrelated products. It's a very different and substantive approach to the current challenge of "personalizing" grocery shopping -- and it's proving effective, too.
In recent years, DTDO's online grocery business has expanded into nine states; this December they'll add New York to the list. The 12 Trends That Will Rule Products In 2013. Near the end of 2012, a group of us at Ziba got together to review what we’d learned over the course of the year.
Working with dozens of clients who serve customers around the world, we designers spend a lot of time observing people as they interact with technology, services, and experiences, noticing how they seek solutions to everyday problems and make decisions. In the process, certain patterns emerge so forcefully that they’re practically unavoidable. Meeting over three sessions spread out over a week, 23 Zibites (designers, researchers, and creative directors) discussed the patterns we’d seen, and distilled them down to the 12 insights we thought were most current and useful, to us and to our clients. Each one is presented here, as a brief essay that suggests how it will affect business practices in 2013, and as an illustration created by one of Ziba’s designers. 1.
