El exceso de velocidad de los vehículos motorizados es un serio problema que, más allá de desincentivar a mucha gente a usar la bici o a usarla por la calzada, llena las calles de la ciudad de riesgo, de ruidos y de humo y las hace menos vivibles, menos ciudadanas y menos nuestras. Una ciudad, en suma, hipotecada a la apabullante omnipresencia automovilística. Cuesta creer que no sea posible alcanzar un gran consenso social y político (entre ciclistas y grupos ciclistas, asociaciones de vecinos, grupos de viandantes, organizaciones ambientalistas, entidades mediáticas, colegios y AMPAS, partidos políticos de oposición, etc. etc.), para denunciar, combatir y parar el sistemático exceso de velocidad al que se mueven a todas horas y por todas las calles de la ciudad los cochecitos y, con frecuencia muy especialmente, algunas motos de gran cilindrada.

ELECTRIC BIKES COME TO U.S. The surging cost of gasoline and a desire for a greener commute are turning more people to electric bikes as an unconventional form of transportation. They function like a typical two-wheeler but with a battery-powered assist, and bike dealers, riders and experts say they are flying off the racks. Gluskin-Townley Group, which does market research for the National Bicycle Dealers Association, estimates 10,000 electric bikes were sold in the U.S. in 2007, up from 6,000 in 2006 Most models have a motorcycle-like throttle that gives a boost while going up hills or accelerating from a stop. On some models, the motor kicks in automatically and adjusts its torque based on how hard the rider pedals.
