Teaching Content Curation and 20 Resources to Help You Do It - InformED

Edward’s University in Austin, Texas, Dr. Corinne Weisgerber is teaching a class on social and interactive media. In addition to building a Personal Learning Network of online mentors and experts they can use to supplement their Google searches, her students are required to “curate” the information they gather for projects the same way a museum curator would curate an art exhibit. “I told them they would need to comb through the resources received through their PLN to discover the significant and relevant, bundle those ideas together, contextualise them for their audience, repackage them and share them through a social media platform,” says Weisgerber.

“In essence, I tasked students with creating the ultimate resource on a particular topic and to share it with the world.” Weisgerber also mentioned that the project has been, without a doubt, one of her most rewarding to grade. It also provides us with a potential way to measure creativity. But Weisgerber is ahead of the curve. ELC 012: Content Curation For Learning. An effective content curator pays attention to the big picture to watch patterns and trends. He or she also focuses on the small details to satisfy the needs of the audience. Gaining competence in content curation is a Learning and Development skill for the 21st century. In this podcast, I chat with Robin Good, new media communication expert, and the publisher of MasterNewMedia.org, a web magazine for communication professionals.

Just dipping a toe into the virtual waters of online content can be overwhelming, and there’s a risk that even the most fearless educator can become paralyzed by the bottomless depths of content and endless pools of resources. While many teachers begin by creating their own content and videos, most start by sifting through free online sources. The amount of available information out there is staggering. YouTube users across the globe upload 48 hours of content every minute. And a google search for “science video” yields over 4 billion results! Fortunately, there are some great websites and services that take the guesswork out of finding and sorting educational video content. Why Should We Teach Content Curation? “Content curation” is hip terminology in the marketing world.

Why Should We Teach Content Curation?

Businesses routinely develop and refine perceptions of their brand on social media through the information they choose to share with specific audiences. Curating content is an essential skill to share with students. With broad and easy access to information, seeing and practicing content curation can help students deal with the often-overwhelming amount of information available at their fingertips.

Access to information ≠ knowledge In a recent Idea Channel Video, host Mike Rugnetta makes a compelling case that the algorithms Google uses to sift through and create connections between a vast amount of Web-based information represent a kind of knowing. Rugnetta cites Larry Sanger’s observation that the Internet means that people can find information more easily than ever before, but access to information is not equivalent to knowledge.
